Vista Sleep/Hibernate problems...?

This is a copy of my post in the Operating Systems section, but it didn't get any response there.

Since this is actually a motherboard issue, I decided to post it here again.

My computer would fail to enter the sleep mode in Vista Ultimate 64 - so I unchecked "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" for all the mice and the keyboard.

It helped - Vista would enter sleep, but would Blue Screen on Wake-up.

Then I came across this article on ASUS website, and it seems to have solved my problems!

I simply changed the Jumpers' positions from +5V to +5VSB, for all the USB ports and the Keyboard/PS2 port (3 jumpers in case of my motherboard).

Apparently Vista has +5VSB enabled by default, and the motherboards might have +5V enabled, which results in conflict. At least that's what happens in case of some ASUS boards.

I have also had problems with APC UPS unit and its Power Chute software, connected to the PCI card with the USB ports. It would give me the message "Unable to communicate with the Battery Backup" on Wake-up. Connecting the UPS to the MB USB port with the +5VSB enabled seems to have cured this issue, too. I left my printers/faxes/gamepads connected to that PCI card, since there is no option of +5VSB for that.

BTW, I would experience the same problem with XP Home, so this issue is not exclusive to Vista.

Here is the solution from ASUS:

"This is VISTA OS problem. VISTA does not allow system to enter Standby mode, if "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" for an USB or PS/2 wake supported device (such as mouse or keyboard) has been checked under "Device Manager", while the used USB or PS/2 port has not switched its power mode to +5VSB, which allows delivery of standby power to USB or PS/2 ports under soft OFF state.
As VISTA enables this option per default, and motherboards often set USB power modes to +5V at the same time, this two settings may result in conflict, hence causes this trouble.

To fix this, simply uncheck "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" for your USB mouse and PS/2 keyboard under "Device Manager", if you do not desire to wake the system via your USB mouse and/or PS/2 keyboard. (Wasn't enough for me, I HAD to enable +5VSB - JG)

If wake from USB mouse and/or PS/2 keyboard option is required for your application, simply turn off your PC, set the particular USB port used to connect your USB mouse, and/or your PS/2 port(depending on if you wish to allow wake from PS/2 device) to +5VSB as per the instructions in your user manual, then turn it on again, and disable "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" for devices you do not wish to use to wake your system from, and your system will be able to enter and wake from standby mode in your desired manner."

Good luck - hope it helps YOU, too!

I have a similar issue. I can put my computer into standby no problem, but i can only wake it using the power button. The keyboard and mouse (both PS/2) will not wake the computer from standby. Biostar says I need to change jumpers to +5 VSB, i do this. Now the PS/2 ports have power when the computer is in standby now (didn't before), i know this because the num lock key is lit on the keyboard when in standby and it wasn't before. So I think I'm all set, but keyboard/mouse still doesn't allow resume from standby. i go to device manager, my keyboard and mouse still do not have a "power management" tab (so i cannot check "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"). i uninstall the keyboard/mouse drivers and reboot. windows reinstalls the drivers, still no power management tab.

i have win xp sp2 pro and a biostar tf7050-m2 mobo. latest bios, windows updates etc. This is frustrating, I have been googling this problem for a week now.

oh, and my powerchute software had no problems on wake up, not before or after enabling +5 VSB. its just that i have to wake with the power button on the front of the computer with or without +5 VSB.

This totally worked. Thanks for the info JG

I have a P5N-E SLI, running Vista Ultimate x86, and I was getting the exact same behavior. Changing the USBPW1-4 and USBPW5-8 jumpers from pins 1+2 to pins 2+3 fixed the problem.

Dude, you are a god....I've been unable to put my DFI nF4 Ultra-D to sleep since I got a Logitech G15 keyboard, but this totally fixed it. Thanks a ton.

Yeah. I don't understand why a lot of motherboards come with the USB jumper set to such that Sleep doesn't work correctly. Changing the jumper to the correct position is one of the first things I do when I get a new motherboard.

I guess some PSU's do not not support the +5VSB, so the "simpler" MB's without the automatic detection might either fail, or cause the OS problems if the jumper is not set properly.

Glad it worked for you guys...

Well, I finally solved the problem with my P5N-E SLI: Switched all the Jumpers to +5VSB, Checked "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" and (!) updated to 1201 BIOS Version. It didn't work until the BIOS update, the last problem was that i could wake the system out of standby mode only once per boot.
I also recognized that the system wakes up when the power LED is blinking, when i set the system into standby mode the second time the LED didn't blink anymore, and fans didn't stop moving. So maybe it was not about waking the system up again, but entering S2/3/4 completely.

* Motherboard: ASUS MSN-E SLI (with USB jumpers)
* Graphic card : ASUS ATI RADEON X1300

Hi all,

First off, thank you so much Justageek for your answer. It really helped me to solve my suspend issues as I had my USB jumpers set to 5v!! However, after changing the USB jumpers and getting my PC correctly suspended, I found out another issue. After resuming my screen went blank and I had to shut down my PC by switching off the electricity. An hour later I saw what the problem was... You have to go to the "Energy options" in Vista, and change your plan settings stating that the energy administration for the PCI-E card is DEactivated. Once you change your settings, everything worked fine!

Thanks a lot again Justageek! anh hope this helps!

See you!

I am going mad with this problem
Asus P5b dlx wifi mobo
Vista ultimate x64
7600GT PCIe card

Have tried various setting but cant solve this stupid problem.

Vista goes into sleep mode & just after 2 sec wake up again but now wont power the keyboard so I cant get the screen back, I have to press the power button from UPs & then start again, when starting again it shows that its resuming windows which means it went into hibernation instead of sleep.

After reading this post I have disabled all the devices in device manger & enabled the Ps2 keyboard & mouse to wake up from BIOS (Is that correct).

It still does not solve the problem & I cant figure out "change jumper positions from +5V to +5VSB" Do I have to physically change something on the motherboard or its a setting in BIOS which I cant find. I am using the latest BIOS 1238 from Asus.

Can someone please guide me step by step to solve this problem.
Thanks.

Asus P5B doesn't have physical usb/ps2 jumpers like NF4 boards. I also had problem going into sleep with my P5B/Vista until I disabled hybrid sleep. Go into Power options >> Change plan settings >> change advance settings >> Sleep >> disable hybrid sleep. This fixed my PC's sleep problem; but strangely, after this I can't even find the option to enable hybrid sleep and hibernation anymore. Hope this helps.

Thanks JustaGeek this was driving me crazy with Windows 7 64-bit. I have an ASUS P5B board and it does indeed have physical jumpers which need to be changed. There were 3 jumpers changes. Sleep/Suspend in now working properly.
