Link.

Confirming earlier rumors, Microsoft has announced it has reached ?release candidate? status with the first service pack for Windows Vista and plans to make it publicly available next week. The company also said it is on track to deliver the final SP1 build in the first calendar quarter of 2008.

Service Pack 1 won?t offer many new features to users. Instead, the update is a collection of bug fixes and improvements designed to fix Vista?s nagging performance problems including long start-up, shutdown and application load times.

Don't give them any ideas or we'll have to get the mean MOD to sort them out .

Side Note:I'll wait until final release of SP1 since my Vista x64 is purring like a kitten .

Are they ever going to fix Explorer so that it actually remembers your view settings? That's the one thing that drives me nuts.

You can read the PDF file of SP1 beta info here.

Side note: Expect Microsoft to add fixes or change some info by the time we see the final version of SP1.

Curse that bloated drm laced pig of an operating system. I spend most of my time looking at how much ram is being used instead of using my PC and let me tell you that Vista is HORRIBLE. It is a failure and Microsoft will go bankrupt. As a matter of fact, I have recently decided that all of the operating systems that have GUIs are just plain bloated, now I am using FreeDos on all of my systems and I do not know how to check the ram usage in FreeDox, but I know it is leaner and I can actually get work done now that I do not have a ram usage meter to gaze at for hours.

Some riveting literature to be sure Didn't see anything specifically explorer-related, but the rest sounds like good stuff.

I did find this after taking another look around: http://www.vistax64.com/tutori...der-view-settings.html

I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Yep, it's on MSDN as well. I can confirm this as I just finished downloading it myself.

Dear god i hope so.

It's pretty much the only complaint i have w/ Vista.

I'm running the very first beta of SP1 on my notebook...never really noticed much difference, but i imagine they improved a few things between the first SP1 release & this final one.

That link I posted above has been working pretty well for me so far. It basically resets all your folders to the "All Items" template and, more importantly, disables the "auto detection" feature where Vista tries to guess which template to use based on what's in the folder. Only had it going for a day, but so far so good.

Sorry to threadjack OP, you may resume your SP1 discussions now

LMAO...that was good. I hope SP1 fixes that deal where you save a file, make a change, save as a different name and Vista says file exists already. arrgh

What's funny is that many of the anti-vista rants read JUST like that.

I am running two systems with XP Pro (dwesktop and laptop) and two systems with Vista Ultimate (desktop and laptop.)

The Vista systems run perfectly and boot and load faster than the XP Pro systems.

Ergo - there is no reason at present for me to install betaware. I'll wait. And yes, I am a TechNet subscriber

I agree !.....if your Vista is working fine then there's no reason to install a beta SP1 at this time, also I still remember recommending a SP2 install for a friend(official version too for her XP PC) and that broke her PC,end of the day service pack installs do break some PCs,most people don't get problems with SP installs but unfortunately some people do, so something to consider especially with beta versions.

SP1 won't be available to the public until next week. If you are a Technet or MSDN subscriber, you will have access to it now.

What problems are you having with that lappy? Post some of the issues and we will try to help you through them. You might be surprised at how simple the fixes might be.

Just really slow. Takes forever to wake up from sleep. Constant activity runs the battery down twice as fast. Always seems to be using at least 50% cpu.

This is the one thing I'm looking forward to the most. Can't believe how quiet this problem has been. Everyone is either a tcp expert and can program their own stack or no one is using vista on a lan and having to copy files across machines....

It should yes. I know the first one or two SP1 Betas couldn't be just "updated" and required reverting then upgrading to newer versions. Not sure if reverting meant reinstallation or what. I'm sure they've fixed that with later Betas and carried it into a public RC.

I installed the first or second Beta and didn't really notice much difference either. As others mentioned, I think its mostly hot fixes that are pushed out to machines that are up-to-date already. There may be a few fixes in SP1 included that are only available via request from MS but all the big ones get pushed out via Vista Update.

Overall very happy with my Vista 64 install as well. Still had some problems up until about a month ago, but between MS hot fixes and driver updates the transition to x64 and > 2GB should be much less painful today for those looking to upgrade.
