It's available on Windows Update if you do this:

Click

Not much point though as I believe the RC will be made public very soon.

It should yes. I know the first one or two SP1 Betas couldn't be just "updated" and required reverting then upgrading to newer versions. Not sure if reverting meant reinstallation or what. I'm sure they've fixed that with later Betas and carried it into a public RC.

SP1 RC1 will not be upgradable to RTM. You will need to uninstall RC1 first.

No...Windows Update never has beta updates .
For the betas as well as TechNet/MSDN subscribers, you run a script that sets a registry key to point your box to the test WU servers. It will probably be the same for the broader public release of RC1.

My understanding was there would be a public RC of sp1, available to all users publicly.

I meant for the normal user that just clicks on Windows Update.

If you turn off the animations in Vista, it speeds up significantly. Hopefully Sp1 will help even more.

No. I have the ISO file through my Technet subscription. SP1 is not a standalone upgrade. It is fully integrated with Vista - the ISO file will create a DVD of all versions of Vista and the install procedure is availble as well. Normally, it will be installed through Windows Update, and it may take more than one session. Instructions state that if you have the Beta version, it must be uninstalled before putting in Vista with RC1. Then, when the final is released, RC1 must be uninstalled before putting in the final. The RC1 has a built in expiration date as well, and will die on June 30th, 2008.

Just installed.

I don't expect it to change things much for me, but it'd be nice if i could run UT3 w/o issues (though i believe that's more of an nV drivers issue).
And hopefully this fixes the folder settings views being forgotten...

Just installed it a few hours ago. IE7 has been crashing a lot, otherwise everything is like it was before.

Haven't done large copies to test performance there. The install did take forever though. That sucked. I was trying to get something else done, should have known better.

Note: there is a watermark that will show up on your desktop about the service pack being an evaluation version. If you want to know how to get rid of it, google it or PM me. I have the modded file in question should anyone want it. Simple rename/replace. Took me 2 minutes.

Running for two days now.
Seems slightly faster overall. Some file operations (virus scan, backup) definitly close to 'insert any other OS here', while file & folder tasks in Explorer are just as slow - well, I am writing that up to old hardware - moving to new and shiny stuff next week.
And everything network related has gotten both faster and stable - if it's on the network and on, it now shows.

Growing to like Vista - especially the way it uses memory (2 Gb comes highly recommended).

Strange. Installed RC1 SP on my vistax64 and didn't realize till now that I don't have the "evaluation copy" thing on my screen.

The SP is not a stand alone package. I downloaded the ISO file, but it was the total Vista DVD with SP1 integrated. Great for clean install. The ISO file is 2.87 GB.

The way it works for those who do not wish to destroy their current system is via Windows Update.

You first have to download and install a .cmd script, which puts a tag in the Registry that triggers the SP1 update. (SP1msdnRK.cmd) Then you visit Windows Update, and begin a sequence of downloads and installs that take a while. The objective is a sequence of 3 KB files ending with KB936330. Once that is installed and after a couple of reboots you have SP1 installed.

The final key is a small text that says "Evaluation Copy etc." just above th tray. I find that useful because it reminds me I have to uninstall this puppy prior to 30 June 2008 - it then turns into a pumpkin. After the final version is released, it will be done by a simple Windows Update.

So far, it works just fine - no dramatic changes - but the OS is a shade snappier. I installed it on a spare mule drive - so I have my regular Vista ultimate available by switching Molex connectors. No risk at all that way.

Installed it on my laptop running Vista Business. WTF? It takes forever to install, like 4-5 reboots? Also, it took my perfectly genuine install and now says Windows Vista (TM) Evaluation copy.Build 6001 at the bottom right? What crap is that? Does that mean the SP1 RC is evaluation or did it jack up my install?
