The RC2 refresh is DARN close to the final bits, but not the final bits. They are still fixing that driver install bug.

Yeah I did a rtm install of x64 yesterday and managed to bsod the os during a driver install. I found the problem, but I don't think it should have been allowed to happen in the first place.

I think that is a seperate issue, the SP1 driver issue is them not picking up some drivers automtically from some third parties that they should be (those vendors didnt follow the rules right). By RTM I presume you mean Vista RTM. If you mean SP1 RTM, you dont have those bits so you can't really say that.

Its Vista X64 Sp1 RTM downloaded from msdn.

I did find what make the driver bsod.
Its referencing an area of memory that pre-sp1 was valid, but now is not.
I rebuilt another version of the driver with the ddk and sent the dumps, and decsription of the problem to leatek, the source of the driver.

currently having to run vista in test mode, because the driver is not certified.

RTM isnt available via MSDN yet, you downloaded the release canidate. Those are not the final bits.

I know there is talk of build 2040 , but I haven't seen it yet or any confirmation of it.

screenshot of the build installed, nowhere does it read RC.

Thats the same build number as the refresh 2. They are still fixing the driver install issue. Its not up on MSDN, just the refresh 2 is (go check, send a link if you find differently, I just reverified after your post). What you have is 99.99% the same as what final will be but it is *NOT* the final bits.

ok, all I see on MSDN is the refresh build.
I'm downloading it now and I'm going to do a md5 of the two iso.
Something is not right.
I know when I downloaded it, it did not say refresh on the site.

Curious. Let me know what you find. Its possible the MSDN group jumped the gun and then got overridden until that bug is resolved. Wouldnt be the first time that happened (I'm actually kinda annoyed its not up for general release with the bug warning, most users here know how to install a driver by hand if needed)

That's cause you don't have any Line 6 hardware :|

Still, I'm loving Vista 64 and can't wait for the final version of SP1.

LOL. I have the same problem. If enough of us send e-mails through support, maybe they'll have pity on us.

For X64 (and I suppose others might care about X86),

What're the build version numbers and MD5 / SHA1 / whatever hashes of the various
RC REFRESH / subsequent / almost RTM / possibly RTM builds?

Are there MS / MSDN download links to these presently, and if so, what are they?

Is there still a way to download "RC REFRESH" (or subsequent) via Windows Update?
I didn't bother since I hadn't seen any ISO image of it so I figured I'd either wait for the ISO image or the next version coming in a couple of days. I wasn't aware they ever HAD made an ISO of any "RC REFRESH", I guess I missed seeing it.

Thanks in advance for any / all info.

As a Microsoft Technet subscriber, I have access to all MS programs. Since yesterday, all versions of Vista have been removed from the download area. This says to me that they are redoing the ISO files to include SP1.

I am waiting patiently. I ran RC1 for over a month and it was great. Uninstalling it was somewhat of a pain, but necessary prior to going final via Windows Update. It took nearly an hour to complete all three stages and phases and reboots.

I installed the ISO image of the first RC (couldn't they have given version numbers to these??), and am still running it.

However my big problem is that RC didn't include any December / January security patches at all, and several critical security updates came out in December and January for Vista 64.

Now I *cannot* apply those patches because the installers for them says they're not applicable to my system (they aren't programmed to let you install them on SP1 RC), though they are applicable to Vista 64, and being newer than the SP RC they're also not corrected by the SP.

I was hoping to install a later RC that included those critical patches since it'd be the only way to have the SP hotfixes / stability improvements as well as keep up to date on security patches, and now I can't find any way to do that.

They claim to have a SP1 RC0 compatible critical security update, but AFAICT it's totally broken, it certainly doesn't install on my x64 SP1 RC0 box, so still I sit with no Dec/Jan security patches.
Security Update for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC0 for x64-based Systems (KB941644)
A security issue has been identified in TCPIP that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downl...484%26DisplayLang%3den

I don't want to be insecure without the last few critical updates (e.g. TCP packet based remote code execution), but VISTA is almost unusable for me without the fixes in SP1 RC wrt. networking, sleep/hibernate, file copy, etc.

Now it could take a MONTH+ to get this fixed? Oy!

I sure wish I could get RC REFRESH or RTM ASAP so I can have a semi-working VISTA64 box.

Hmmmm....maybe there's wisdom in those folks who say to wait for SP1 of any new OS?

Yeah.. tried Vista 1 year ago when it first came out; worst data loss ever when it went out and "fixed" multiple unrelated hard disks.

Put it on the shelf until 3 weeks ago to set up a PC just for games and experimental software development / testing of some Vista specific APIs.

I haven't been planning to to much with it until SP1 is out, though I don't feel very happy even running games on it (exposed to the net) without the security patches fully up to date.

I dunno! I'm having a hard time believing 'Refresh 2' isn't 'SP1 Final'...

Especially when I see "LONGHORN_RTM" all over registry.

There's no time bomb, no watermark, et cetera!

Microsoft has "recalled" RTM software before. It was done with SBS 2003 R2. After shipping boxed copies, some mistakes were found and the entire release was put on hold.

I did a MD5 on the two downloads I did of X64 off of msdn.
They do not match.
The one I downloaded o n 2/5 does not match the one I downloaded on 2/7.
The one I downloaded on 2/5 I'm positive said RTM.
The one from 2/7 was a refresh 2.
I'm trying to see what files are different and so far I don't see any difference in the major ones.

The kernel files match exactly, same build date and versions.
So its some other dll files somewhere that are different.

I think its as suggested.
They put up RTM then pulled it back when they found the driver problems.

Heh. This is turning into a caper! The great thing about all this is the speculation and talk will vanish once its on WU once and for all.

I can confirm that RC Refresh 2 is the RTM. The build was created a few weeks ago, but wasn't declared RTM until it had received some more testing internally and externally. Basically, they put it in a glass box with a sign on it that says "break glass only in emergency" If a big enough bug is found during the final round of testing, they rebuild and try again. This didn't happen so the build was signed off on for RTM.

Yep, but arent you still fixing that driver installer issue?

AFAIK the actual bits on disk are final, its the installer that is getting the bug fix to deal with that driver reinstall issue during installation. Stash says however it's final (which is different from what other MS channels told us), so I asked him to clarify.

From what I understand, the changed bits in final will essentially be installation routines for certian types of hardware, preventing some people with the hardware in question from having to reinstall drivers. This decision was based on feedback through the Customer Improvement program as well as the feedback from the SP1 release candidates, apparently. I read this on the Vista Team blog.
