Hi,

How do I configure the start menu such that when I mouseover the "All Programs" link at the bottom, it pops up all programs, rather than me having to click on it and it showing up in the same window area? This is the behavior of the classic start menu but I wanna have it for the default start menu as well.

Also, how do I enable drag and dropping of folders in all programs? Right now it doesn't seem to work.

TIA.

If you hover it will pop up without clicking.

There is a brief delay otherwise it would pop out as soon as you tried to move up from the start button you just clicked and into the pinned and frequent items above.

If you want it to pop out to the side the classic is the way to go. I think the classic method sucks though. Its much faster having things in a vertical line within the start menu (hint: you can navigate FAST using your mousewheel). Plus it doesn't obscure the non program related items on the right half of the start menu.

Right mouse drag to the start menu, hover over "all programs" to make it pop up (per the above) then release when your pointer is inbetween two existing folder. If running UAC you should expect a prompt since you are essentially editing a folder that has admin ACLs.

My general advice anytime you start using a new OS: Give the defaults a try for a little while. There is a reason why it was designed that way. If after a few weeks you don't dig it go ahead and change to classic. The control panel in Vista is a prime example. I always used the 'classic' control panel in XP but these days the control panel is becoming so crowded it takes longer to find what I'm after. The new control panel is organized so that prolly 19 times out of 20 what I'm looking for is within a click.

I've always hated the Classic start menu. Is a hassle chasing down the expanding menus. I like Vista's setup much better. It's cleaner, and faster to get to where you're going.

In my opinion, the #1 thing that will save you time with the new Start Menu is the instant search bar. If you haven't tried using this feature extensively, well, you should.

When you are new to Vista and going through the pains of "where the hell did they put..." the instant search is your best friend. It usually has what you are looking for before you finish typing it.

Different question, but also relating to the Vista start menu. I was changing the start menu in Vista to how I've always had it look in XP. I'm using the Classic view. I opened the start menu, right clicked on programs, and clicked 'Open All Users'. Then I created a folder called "Apps". Then I messed around with moving shortcuts to it, moving them out again, but in the end, I wanted to remove the folder again.

First of all, Vista wouldn't let me, it said I need better permissions or something for it. Then it allowed me to delete, but upon restart, the folder was back.

My question is: How can I switch off whatever annoying way that Vista thinks it is being helpful to me and restoring my deleted start menu items? I also tried to delete a shortcut for a game I had uninstalled, and that shortcut keeps coming back too! This is really frustrating.
