Vista Still sucks

I've been reading how most of Vista's problems are fix with SP1 so I decided to give it a go with Vista 64 Ulitmate on my system. After I installed it the computer started freezing up randomly and when I searched online it seems there are a lot of other people with the same problem and no solution.

http://www.lockergnome.com/bla...on-workaround-for-now/

Here's my specs:
AMD X2 4600
ECS ECS 6100SM-M
2GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800
Saphire ATI 3850

I checked my cpu and memory as the system crashes and it looks normal. My system was working perfectly fine on XP Pro right before I decided to "upgrade" I disabled my sound drivers and had the latest display drivers installed and no other devices were attached.

Anyone else have the same problem? Will Vista 32 work better?

Vista does not suck,Vista x64 HP SP1 runs fine on my humble 3800+ x2 CPU for 18 months now.

I even have a laptop with Vista Home Premium x86 SP1(6 months of use ) again no problems for me.

As to your link,I could post loads of links like that with any OS ,ie issues with XP/SP3 link, another one link 2 ,my point is just because you have a problem regardless of OS in question does not mean it sucks.

My system was working perfectly fine on XP Pro right before I decided to "upgrade" I disabled my sound drivers and had the latest display drivers installed and no other devices were attached.

Why did you disable them?..Vista will just get on with its upgrade regardless of drivers installed.

Did you look in Problems /Reports and solutions icon(its in Control Panel),also check reliability and performance monitor too(just type reliability in search box to find it) any red crosses in the graph when you select the reliability monitor will give the cause of crashes etc...

It could be a software or simple driver issue, you need to do some troubleshooting.
Run Memtest 86+ too, never know when ram decides to go faulty.

I notice you have an AMD X2 4600 CPU,I hope YOU DID NOT INSTALL the AMD x2 driver or AMD Optimizer like you would normally do with XP,they are not needed for Vista since it has native dual core support, installing those will cause issues.

I presume you have checked all your 64 bit drivers are the latest and installed ie chipset, video card, sound drivers etc...

PEBKAC, I'm afraid. Vista Ultimate x64 running here on about a dozen boxes and laptops with no issues whatsoever.

Sounds like you did an upgrade install. This is generaly not recommended and hasn't been recommended for quite some time. You should have done a "clean" upgrade install, which copies over your XP stuff into a windows.old dir so you can peruse it for important stuff and eventually delete it when you're fully migrated. The subsequent Vista install is basically a fresh install.

Did you install Vista drivers for all your hardware? Relying on the upgrade and leaving all your devices with XP drivers, etc, is bound to pose problems. Back up your stuff and start over.

After spending 6 hours trying to figure out the problem I finally gave up. Just to let you know, I am an IT professional working for a top 5 consulting firm and I do this kind of thing for a living. I have both Vista 64 ultimate and 32 Ultimate. I downloaded my versions from MSDN developer site so maybe it's the version I'm using, but I highly doubt that. I finally gave up around noon today and I reinstalled XP Pro with absolutely not problems whatsoever. Maybe in the future if I feel like I have a day or two to kill I might try to give it another go. But right now it's not worth my time to figure this out when other people have the same issues.

I didn't do an upgrade, but I did rely on Vista to install the drivers. The only drivers I installed were the ones for my video card and one for my wireless network adapter.

I installed Vista 3 times. Each time it did the same thing. The screen would freeze even before I had a chance to install any drivers. Finally when I went to do another install, it went to the Vista installation boot screen and didn't do anything. I just get a mouse pointer and no start up screen.
This is just flakey.

Another thing was when I started Vista in safe mode it didn't crash. So what could it have been?

That would indicate a driver, right?

Of course... but he already knew that... ya know, because he's an IT Professional working for a top 5 consulting firm and he does this for a living... he was just testing you...

I wrote Vista still sucks hoping to get a quick response and maybe a solution. I should've realized the title would attract flamers as well. Thanks for the comments, but I don't need to hear them. If you have a bright idea on how to fix the issue then be my guest. I realized it might be a driver issue, but if you got past the title and read what I wrote you would've seen I disable all my non essential devices. Additionally, something in Vista is fubaring the reinstall when I try to boot from the install disc.

I guess some of you guys don't know how to read past the title...

Not with a dumb-ass title like that...

Now you're just being a troll.
I've installed windows XP about 100 times on many different builds but never had I had an OS just not work after it's installed when the machine is perfectly fine.

I think it might have something to do with the hard drive because the system seems to freeze while it's accessing the hard drive. I'll have to try with another hard drive when I find some time.

Another reason I think it's hard drive related is because the symptoms get progressively worse as I continue to reboot after the system freezes.

But I know the hard drive is good because I'm using it for XP right now...

What does that do?

I can't give a technical explanation, but AHCI is a more modern interface for SATA hds. IDE is older, but it seems to be more reliable. You change the setting in BIOS. That can sometimes fix instability, and that would be one of the first places I'd look(after testing ram) with crashing problems early in the install process.

Edit:
Wikipedia on AHCI

Where have you heard that?

From the truck loads of uninformed masses.

Incidentally, I have found one thing I dislike about Vista. I recently put Vista Home Premium 32 bit on my notebook. I was impressed that it found drivers for everything except for the integrated web cam, and Vista pointed me towards a driver that would work.

However, when I play a DVD using Media Center, it will unpause at random. I will pause the DVD while I run to the bathroom, only to hear the DVD begin playing again while I'm standing over the toilet.

The OP really set himself up for flame material by bragging about what an IT professional he was eventhough he doesnt understand what booting in safe mode does nor what ACHI does.

I dont get why people talk about how something sucks then try to pass off their internet credentials as some kind of proof.

You got a screen saver come on after a few minutes? XP MCE does this on me too, if the screensaver or power management kicks in while the dvd is paused, it'll unpause, and play on top of the screensaver.

Have you ever installed any other OS other than XP?

Based on your post it sounds like you have a sample size of 2, and because 1st OS works fine and the 2nd doesn't you assume it's the 2nd OSe's fault.

It could well be that XP just doesn't touch some faulty or problematic hardware of yours, but other OSes will have issues. Have you ever installed Linux on that computer? Have you tried installing Windows 2008 Server (you can download a trial iso for free)?

Are you really doing a fair comparison? You said you only install the video driver and wireless network adapter in Vista, do you do the same in XP? If you are installing all the latest drivers in XP but not in Vista it's a rather flawed comparison. Are you installing all the windows updates? Have you tried running the memtest overnight?

I would start with the 3850, it's an AGP card and the drivers are your problem.
