Vista to take 15 gig of HD space

My Windows partition is 5GB, and it's got 1.5GB free, and 1GB taken up with The Sims 2 crap, plus some other stuff like documents and a few programs.
So basically Vista needs about 12x the space of XP
Hopefully it will be able to be trimmed.

15 GB is practically nothing to me for a new OS install, much less in the 1-3 years when I switch to Vista. As mentioned, some of that is paging, some is probably options you can remove/choose not to install. If you can't afford the drive space as cheap as it is, or don't want to use the OS for whatever other reason, just don't get it. I'll weigh the pros and cons when its actually out and evaluate from there. If it truly does offer better security, last thing I want to do is scare Mom and Pop away from it because of non-existant "OMGXORZ disk space!" issues, when compared to them getting less-infested, easier to maintain desktops.

a pitty since it is becoming more and more viable to have windows on a flash memory stick

The only drive in my current system is an 18Gb 15K scsi drive. There's absolutely no reason an operating system should consume as much hard drive or memory space as windows. WTF does it do with all that space? MS needs to hire some old school demo coders, guys that could do amazing things in 4Kb.

Que all the AT'ers who don't believe that new software should take advantage of newer hardware. Gamers don't expect the new games to use 6 year old hardware, do they? If Vista didn't harness the power of today's hardware, I'd be pissed.

This is not nessasarily bad. Perhaps they are throwing in a lot of free stuff. Virus scanners, burning software, DVD and HD-DVD player, photshop, and whatever else that should have always been included in an OS. And not to forget the insane amount of drivers out there now and how big they are in file size.

Guess we'll have to wait and see though.

I don't know why you guys are complaining... i haven't seen a system sold in the last year with anything less than 100GB.

Actually most of that is just drivers and redundant drivers and files.

That is a damn good question. Isn't it essentially the same as XP? Even if it included a whole bunch of new free applications (which is doesn't) there's _no way_ it would take up 15 gigs. Could be big media files?...

As a completely fresh install, it's just a tad over 7gb. But it balloons really fast, and part of that i think is because of shadow copy and volume shadow copying.

It's absolutely NOTHING like XP. It was created from the ground up.

Really? No NT kernel? I've never read anything technical about it, just assumed it would be more of the same, I guess I'm Microsoft prejudiced. Links?

I know it's more than 15GB but here: Dell 1100 - 80GB

There's probably hundreds more but that's just an example.

How soon will we be forced to make the switch over to Vista? Are software companies developing solely for the Vista platform now? My Xp pro systems work great and im hoping to squeeze another few yrs out of the XP OS before i have to pay $$$$$ for x amount of copies of Vista for licences on my network systems. Always in a no-win situation. I hated it back when i was "forced" to upgrade to PCI-e architecture too, just for a graphic card upgrade, but then i needed new memory too ect ect... always forcing us to spend more more more ugh
