Vista to Vista Network Problem

I have 3 computers in my house.

2 for me: Desktop (XP and Vista), Laptop (Vista)
1 for my parents: Desktop (XP and Vista)

I have them all networked though my ASDL Router.
(SpeedTouch 510, if needed).

Main purpose of the network is file/printer sharing.

Printer sharing works fine in all cases.

File sharing is the problem:

XP to XP = fine
XP to Vista = fine
Vista to XP = fine
Vista to Vista = not fine

Whenever I enable network discovery and file and printer sharing, on Vista, it comes up showing *password required*...I didn't set ANY password whatsoever.

When I try to retrieve a file, it asks me for my username and password....

WHY??!!
How do I stop that?!

This may or may not help, but when in a workgroup, you have to ensure that the username/pass with which you're logged onto the local computer matches the credentials set up on the remote machine. Otherwise, you'll get the prompt for creds. Usually you can just check the box to remember your password and it will not bug you anymore, but that's not always the case.

Also, when trying to access the remote computer, are you trying to get into the administrative share (eg. C$) or just folders for which you've turned on sharing? If they're shared folders, you can check the permissions for those shares, which sometimes differ from the local permissions of the target folder. Changing those perms might help with your issue.

you're looking for simple file sharing and it's not an option in a vista to vista network situation. Windows Vista by default does not allow simple file sharing. Access to shared folders, including the public folder (if shared), requires a user name and password. Vista is looking for administrative privileges to allow you to access your shares. You have vista computer A and computer B. (As an example) On computer A your user name is user1 with a password of test and computer B is user2 with a password of test2. You need to make sure both accounts have administrative rights. When you try to access shared files on computer B from A, you'll be prompted for a password. You need to enter computer B's username and password and vice versa if you're trying to access shares on computer A from B. If this is strictly at home, make sure both vista machines have the network set to private. Yes....It is strictly for home so I just want to get it working.

I will try those suggestions on the weekend, when I have some more time.
