This recent update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941649 kills my Vista 64bit ultimate system. While it installs all right, during the next bootup Vista gets stuck during the loading bar animation which just keeps looping and looping over infinitely until I hit the reset button. There is no HDD activity during the bar animation at any point but it keeps pausing for very short moment of time continuously every other second though.

I installed this update twice and both times I had to revert back to previous system restore point by using Vista DVD setup repair function.

Any other Vista user experiencing this? The update seems to fix some timings during startup, dunno if this causes some probs or not. Does Rivatuner load it's low-level driver during this part of startup? I heard this update greatly improves Vista behaviour for some users so would be nice to get it working some way. Never had any probs with Vista so far but this it getting irritating.

EDIT: Seems there are others too with the same problems. Look here this thread: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=239749

My Vista x64 system takes a long time to shutdown now, other than that the patch does not seem to have any other problems for me. The shutdown slowdown was resolved once the patch was removed.

My vista x32 system (with the patch) has not changed.... noticeably.

I think this says it all,

Update information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

I had a few issues with the initial shutdown and reboot, but after that I've been fine.

I gotta agree with Mem here, folks need to read the KB article before applying a patch. When the patch is as obscure and hard to find as this one (i.e., not generally available via WU), you have to know you're playing with fire, especially when MSFT says you're playing with fire.

Yes, of course it's like playing with fire, but that's why I had worknig system restore point ready. Anyway, that update has an updated msahci.sys driver which my system uses and there's chance that the driver cannot be updated because it's in use all the time. Even when system is shutting down to apply updates, that particular driver cannot be updated as it's used for disk operations. Now during next boot that driver still remains as old version and is not anymore compatible with all the other stuff the update updates. How do I solve this? Do you folks who have this working use AHCI or legacy IDE and do you use manufacturer AHCI driver like Intel Matrox Storage?

I disabled AHCI and booted into Vista fine!

You disabled AHCI before applying the patch and installed IDE-controller drivers in Vista OR just switched to IDE in BIOS after failed bootup?

I just switched to IDE in the BIOS after the failed bootup. It was that simple. I went from a PC which would not boot into windows to functioning in less than 60 seconds.

I had this same exact issue occur. Funny thing is that my Vista x86 laptop updated fine (was hoping to fix some wireless issues). Just the x64 system bit the dust. Sounds like it's the AHCI option in the BIOS.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to enabling AHCI in the BIOS?
