Vista upgrade coupon question.

I got some question concernign the upgrade thing. Does the free upgrade thign give you an oem vista or a retail vista? Since the recent announcement about the eula defination, retail verion is looking mroe attractive atm.

What does the announcement have to do with the attractiveness of OEM vs Retail? The OEM license hasn't changed at all, you were never allowed to transfer an OEM license to a different machine.

As for the Newegg deal, they are selling OEM copies of XP, so you would get an OEM copy of Vista.

I won't be too sure on the newegg part, I heard rumor the coupon is for boxed version of vista, but not confirmed, that why I ask here.

They aren't going to sell you an OEM version and then upgrade it to a Retail version of Vista for free.

Actually you might be wrong about that. When I upgraded from 98 to XP I went from OEM to retail. I have never seen a OEM upgrade edition. All upgrade I have even had was retail editions.

So? You can do an upgrade with a full OEM version.

Not all OEM full version OS'es allow an upgrade.

Someone edumacate me on my thought process here:

Can I buy this OEM copy of XP for my main rig which is running a retail FPP XP Pro, then transfer that retail FPP to another PC? I want to have the option to upgrade to Vista on my main rig in the future, not on a PC that won't have the better hardware to run Vista.
My guess is no, since my retail version product ID is different than the OEM version.

Main rig -> XP Pro retail currently: 'downgrade' to XP OEM, then install Vista OEM using coupon
PVR rig -> W2K Pro -> use XP Pro retail upgrade from main rig

Like I said, I know Microsoft's track record on this, and I doubt I can, so this deal is probably not what I need.

I don't think microsoft actually track you on it sicne u wrre never require to put in the old os cd key, just the cd itself in the drive

They have you revalidate, and then tie the Vista key into your old key. I assume once you upgrade, you can't go back and reinstall your old OS if you don't like Vista.

I don't see why not ,as the retail version will reactivate and the oem version will be tied to the Vista upgrade. While wandering around at the MS website, I found a webpage that actually had model#s of what oem copies were going to be tied to the upgrade Once you upgrade ,that upgrade will be tied to whatever pc you have it on.

I won;t be too sure of it, after all, if u will nto be able to use your old key ever again, what is the point of the system rollback.

That is incorrect, valid on Win XP is pruchased after 10/26, however, some of the software does have a requirement that hardware be purchased at the same time.

I got in on this, although I am unsure how I want to upgrade to Vista. I posted what I wanted to do previously, but my gut feeling is I will be calling Microsoft to explain things and register via a tech rather than the automated method. Only downside to this is my main rig will not be as upgradable using the OEM license as it would be for my previous retail FPP license.
