That's my biggest peeve right now. By complaining we've managed to make MS allow a full OGL path in Vista and then the manufacturers aren't releasing drivers for it ><

Don't lose sight of the big picture either:

Both ATI and nVidia have sucky drivers available for XP and Linux. It ain't just a Vista thing (although it's bad for Vista atm).

I'm giving the 97.27 and 97.34 drivers a shot tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

I emailed NVIDIA. Here's their response.

"Hello Mark,

Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

I understand that you would like to know the release date of the Vista drivers.

We apologize for this inconvenience. In early January, we will be providing updated drivers for the graphics cards however as we have recently just received the RTM version of Windows Vista, we still require more time to conduct all of our internal testing as well as Microsoft Logo testing that is required for a certified drivers. However the Windows Vista driver release will come before the Windows Vista consumer retail version launch.

Regards,

NVIDIA Customer Care."

Bleh, that's worse than what I would expect. You'd think they'd have had weekly builds from msft. Their target is the consumer release obviously. Well at least they let out some betas.

They probably do, maybe not as frequent as weekly though. But even so they still have to do the full QA rounds on the RTM and whatever hoops MS requires for WHQL.

I hear you. But other vendors (non video) don't seem to have a problem. Doubly odd in that Avalon/WPF is one of the "pillars of WinFX" that actually made it to RTM and it's very dependant on the GPU. You'd think everyone would've wanted good drivers for release.

Then again if you ask msft or the vendors, the release is in Jan 07

They sorta do... released to the enthusiastic guinea pigs at forums.nvidia.com (i.e. 97.27 and 97.34 versions that are floating about). Thats why I said keep an eye on there

I suppose Microsoft could have delayed release of the RTM build until the drivers were ready (or until the consumer launch in January)...

If they release it quickly after going RTM than there are driver issues, if they wait than people complain.

97.34 drivers still exhibit problems with FEAR. HL/Source are ok though.

I'll try the 97.27s over the weekend.

Or they could've stayed in close contact with the vendor and nurtured the process. I know they do this for a lot of markets they want to penetrate and products they want to succeed.

But yes people will complain regardless. I am complaining that they couldn't have a more symbiotic relationship with, what, three major video vendors.

Dunno wtf is up with that but if you go to the VSTA branded version of this board you can download the AGP patch and it works great. Evidently ASRock didn't feel the people with the regular non Vista branded version needed to have this patch... *sigh*

Yes, that's right, the brand of my mobo is Ass Rock. And yes, I'd really like it if you people post up about how my mobo sucks. That would be great .

Now if only ATITool worked in Vista.

I'm having this same issue with my X850 pro on an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have an updated agp driver for me to try. They sent me an updated bios to try in response to my tech support request, but no agp driver. And Nvidia doesn't have anything really ready for Nforce drivers in Vista. So I'm SOL wanting to run both an Opteron 165 and a x850 pro.

I've been pretty impressed by Vista and not many issues with my setup. I do have the problem where it has trouble coming out of sleep, though, and the problems seemed to start after I installed the ATI driver. It worked OK using the built-in windows driver.

3 systems I have had running on Vista with no real problems over the last few months.

P4 3.06
Abit AI7 mobo
Nvidia 6800GS
2gb ram
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic

AMD Atlon 3500+
MSI sumthing sumthing board
Nvidia 6800GT - ATI X850XT
2gb Ram
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic

C2D E6600
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
Nvidia 7950GT- ATI X850XT
2GB ram
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic

On all builds I have used 64bit Ultimate, the biggest problem was with Creative. For the longest time they had no workable drivers, and when they finally released some they came with expirary dates (who the hell does that?). Now everything runs fine, I play games no problem and the sound is working pretty good. Though Creative is complaining about Vista and EAX does not work, nor will it anytime soon. I have had problems now and then with video drivers, some would work on 1 system, but not another, or certain systems would have glitches, but nothing universal.

All in all everything has been what a Beta should be. I have used it to trouble shoot my systems and taken what I have learned and applied it to my work.

I haven't had any crashes in Vista with ATi's Vista beta drivers. Lack of support for OpenGL sucks, though.
