Vista waking up from hibernation

Background:

Vista Ultimate, while in Hibernation, wakes up randomly from time to time during the middle of the night. Imagine a roaring desktop waking up at 2am or 4am in the morning. Just last night, the desktop woke up at 3:00am on the dot from hibernation. I have no idea why this is happening, and I have tried everything possible from google (seems so).

Maybe it's Windows' settings:

[*] Waking up at 3am is common with Windows Update, so I changed it to 3pm daily. Still wake up 3am sometimes.
[*] Went into Task Scheduler, and I unchecked all the ones with "Wake the computer to run this task" (Media Center > mcupdate_scheduled & MobilePC > TMM). The computer still woke up between 2-4am.
[*] Went into Device Manager, and disabled all USB devices, ethernet, keyboard, and mouse from waking the computer up. That didn't work.
[*] Maybe Windows Update wasn't applied correctly, so I changed it to download and notify me only. Of course, it woke me up at 3am last night.
[*] Event Viewer shows absolutely nothing.

Maybe a motherboard issue:

[*] Disabled everything in BIOS that can possibly wake the computer up, but the common Wake-on-LAN was already disabled. The BIOS is set to S3.
[*] I don't use wired LAN (the desktop uses a USB wifi).
[*] There's no modem installed, so the telephone line isn't responsible.

Summary:

Every steps were taken prior to last night, and the computer still woke up at 3am. The hibernation feature is great, but I am now forced to Shut Down instead. This is getting fruastrating since there's NO way to check why the computer keep waking up at some common times in the morning. Maybe a note, "Hey the computer woked up for scheduled blah blah blah" would be nice (not needed if the user physically wake it up).

As a bonus, my desktop in the living room does the same thing. These computers have completely different hardware. I have tried the exact same "fixes," but nothing seems to work. They both run Vista Ultimate SP1. Any new ideas?

I'd still lean towards this being a LAN wakeup. Try unplugging the USB wifi and see if it still does it, that will at least narrow it down.

Have you disabled "restart after power failure" in the BIOS? Maybe something is causing a brown-out and triggering the restart. If you are using a UPS (and you should be) then this shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT >> One thing you could try is disconnect the USB wifi before hibernation and see if it restarts. If it doesn't restart check device manager for the wifi settings to see if there is something there to restart and disable it.

I've noticed something similar on my computer...the thing will wake up at random times of the day (not limited to any specific time), and I can't figure out why.

In the Event Viewer it always lists the "wake source" as RTC (real-time clock), but this isn't corresponding to any recordings I have set up, or any other scheduled tasks for that matter.

Found something you can try with Vista, try these at a command prompt:

powercfg ?lastwake
Reports information about the event that woke the computer from the last sleep transition.

powercfg ?devicequery wake_armed
Lists devices that are currently configured to wake the computer from any sleep state.

C:\Windows\system32>powercfg -lastwake
Wake History Count - 0

C:\Windows\system32>powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

(empty space here, so no device is set to wake)

The wake count is zero probably because I always jumped off my bed and held down the power button before it could fully resume. I'll run the command again next time, where Windows is allowed to fully resume.

Hmm, that might also be why there's nothing in the event viewer. You should check there too after you let it fully wake up.

Hard powering off the system like that is usually not a good solution to any problem, with the possible exception of a total system freeze in which that is the only way to restart the computer.

It is best to let it wake up and then shut down using the proper method. I would surmise that the reason that Vista takes forever to shut down has to do with all the random and sundry things that it has to close out before being properly powered down.

I had been having this problem occasionally and started having it again since DST went into effect. I had also combed through the task scheduler and disabled any waking of my machine and also had the RTC listed as the wake source when it this started again. I noticed the up time in the task manager was an hour off from the wake time, so maybe there is some kind of bug going on related to DST? Anyway I rebooted and disabled the EPG service and it has stayed asleep the past couple of mornings. From that I can tell this has been an ongoing issue with Vista (probably more widespread than realized if the PC goes back to sleep before anyone notices) and there hasn't been any definite solution.
