I'm building a new PC and can't seem to pull the trigger and spend $179 on Windows Vista when it seems like it's basically a jazzed up version on XP and when Windows 7 is due out later this year (I know it will get delayed).

For those of you that have made the plunge, is it worth it? Did you find it cheaper than at newegg?

Thanks.

IMHO, Vista is great, sooo...

Yes, moving to Vista is worthwhile!

IMHO, W7 is going to be a case of 'less-is-more', sooo...

No, I wouldn't wait for it! You already got 'less' than Vista!

IMHO, Vista is NOT worth $179, but...

Vista x64 for >$100 would be worth it!

Happy hunting!

I think if you buy a pre-built system with Vista installed by an OEM after July, you are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7.

Do you know of somewhere?
You can find it all over...

For instance: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16832116488 ($99.99 w/free shipping)

That's Vista Home Premium x64 (my favorite version) from a trusted vendor.

I am actually going to agree with VinDSL for once, and second that Home Premium 64 is the way to go. Don't spend the extra money on Ultimate as it brings very little extra discernible value to the table.

If you already have XP, I'd stick with that until Win7. If you have to buy either way, consider Linux, otherwise I would say 64bit Home Premium also.

How are you getting "less" with Windows 7? It's newer and more advanced than Vista with more features. Just because it runs faster it doesn't mean it has less features. It's simply a de-bugged and better implemented version of Vista.

OP: Wait for Windows 7. I had to revert to XP from Vista, and I like 7.

Right now? No way, not if youre gonna pay for it. Dont even wait for Win7. Install the beta now. The beta is rock solid - its not like any other microsoft beta OS before it. I use it full time on all 4 of my PCs, and I wouldnt believe its a beta if I didnt know otherwise. The only real bugs I've been experiencing are occasional explorer crashes, but they seem to be occurring less frequently over time. I've had no BSODs or anything that would really prevent me from getting any real work done, so you're pretty safe to use it.

The only reason not to use Win7 is if you're adverse to having to reinstall it again when the RC or Final comes out.

Personally I would wait for W7, even though I've had a pretty good experience with Vista.

 Agreed. Unless you have an extreme aversion to re-installing your OS, just grab the W7 beta for now and they buy it when it comes out.

As far a stability and ease of use go, W7 was actually an easier install on my laptop than Vista because all the drivers (except Synaptics trackpad) were either already present or were obtained via MS update. With Vista I had to use the the stupid driver CDs just just to get the network card working.

I am by no means an anti-Vista guy, but I personally wouldn't buy any MS OS once its replacement has gone beta. Especially, if the OS being replaced was less than well loved. I'm sure that MS will support Vista for quite some time to come, but I could see vendor/hardware support drying up relatively quickly after W7 goes retail. I imagine it will be a lot like the transition from ME to XP.

If you already have a legal copy of XP I might use that and buy Windows 7 when it becomes available. If you don't I would do as others
have suggested and buy the OEM Vista Home Premium X 64 for a $ 100. I am running it with no problems what so ever. I doubt I will be upgrading to Win 7
right when it comes out myself. I usually wait for a good reason or a new build if I have no problems with my current OS as I am too cheap.

There's NO way I'd wait until the first-quarter of 2010 for a stripped down, optimized version of Vista when you can get a full version of Vista x64 for under 100 bones today!

But, that's just me...

Windows 7 is going to be RTM around August 2009.
RC1 is scheduled for around April 2009.

Absolutely no reason to pay out for vista now.

The free beta runs great right now, and I would say you could use it for your main OS provided that you're not doing anything mission-critical.

LoL!

Kudos to MS!!!

It's working...

BTW, in case you guys haven't put it all together yet...

http://itmanagement.earthweb.c...s+7+Really+Mojave?.htm

Bwahahahaha! Talk about living in a vacuum...

EDIT

For the Rip Van Winkle types...

http://www.mojaveexperiment.com/

I reported on this some time ago, but nobody ever saw a screenshot of "Mojave" aka "Windows 7" except the guinea pigs!

The only reason MS is waiting a year to release Mojave - I mean Windows 7 - is so they can get the 'touch screens' working throughout the entire operating system - that's all...

Heh! Why do I have to explain this stuff to everybody?!?!?

I would say its runs ok but not great ,try installing PowerStrip you can't even boot back into WINDOWS without rolling back to last known safe config ,you just get nice scrambled image at destop,BSOD with SuperAntiSpyware to name a few,as to installation half my hardware was not detected like well known NIC Netgear FA311 card,I had to force drivers for that, wireless belkin NIC to name a few yet people say it runs great?...Its beta SO EXPECT ISSUES AND USE WITH CAUTION,to be fair I don't blame Win7 because its beta and not a retail or RTM candidate plus it does have software issues at the moment like above ,I would not however says its runs great or perfect, btw yesterday I launched it and it froze(hard lockup at desktop) on inital bootup for that day,2nd reboot it seemed ok (had XP on this machine before and it never did that, was a clean install btw too).

If anybody has tried an old 9700 ATI card in analogue mode and can get it to run in native res 1680x1050 res on a LCD with Win7 beta please let me know since I still can't,tried every possible driver and monitor inf file(worked ok on XP with same LCD).

At the moment you can see I have honest concerns/issues with Win7 Beta(32 bit version).

Back to the main question $179 for Vista hmm no I would not pay that for any OS,I'm sure you can get it cheaper then that.
