I am looking to setup a reporting automation 'mess' to reduce some administrative overhead..
I'll outline what I would like to happen, and then describe briefly an option that comes to mind, as the topic suggests, its feasibility is somewhat dependent on the powers of VisualBasic..
An application generates daily logs and sends them out to selected email addresses. The logs should be parsed and the data should be put in a format that is easily referable and comprehendible by upper management (maybe thats asking for too much..); a document/spreadsheet. The document should then be published to a standard intranet location.
I figure a fairly dirty solution could look something like this:
An outlook client running on a machine with rules to call a particular VB macro when a certain log is generated and received. VB would then carry the parsed information from that email into an Excel spreadsheet where it is formatted to specific cells to give it that 'comprehendible look'. VB would then hopefully be able to push the .xls file off with a unique file name and everyone is happy.
Being that the emails are generated in simple text, I would not doubt there could be an easier way to parse them.. and by easier, I mean without Outlook and VisualBasic. However, getting the data into the comprehendible format, I gather VB would be almost a given.
