multis are ok, they wont harm you and they very well might supplement that random vitamin/mineral(s) you are missing. if the doc says you are low on something, good to focus on that too.

because its boring to have stir fry every night?

vitamins can provide some freedom

unless I eat spinach, I never seen to get enough iron. but I dont LOVE spinach, at all.

So don't eat stir fry every night. You can use substantially similar ingredients to make a variety of dishes.

Spinach isn't even the preferred source of iron. If you don't like it, eat mussels, oysters, beef, turkey, fish, beans, tofu, potato, broccoli, chickpeas, etc. All of those have more iron than spinach.

Honestly I think the body does have trouble absorbing pill-form vitamins sometimes. I really don't take them much anymore because I figure with green juicing I get most everything I need.

A sure sign of Snake Oil is a quick fix to a problem you can't quantify.

they wont harm you and they very well might supplement that random vitamin/mineral(s) you are missing.
This logic is the sole reason the vitamin industry exists.
Hell, it should be the industry slogan...

"They won't harm you and they may just help you!"

There was a story that said the scientist/chemist doing the iron calculations put the decimal point in the wrong place and the myth about spinach has been perpetuated since Popeye.

If you have a balanced diet, you probably don't need them.

I had some blood work done and my doctor said I had extremely low vitamin D, so she put me on a heavy supplement for five weeks, then recommended I take a multivitamin with vitamin D after that.

I think there are only some vitamins where the excess is flushed out (C being one).

Maybe a balanced diet may help but you also may need sun exposure for your vitamin D deficiency. Seeing how low Vitamin D is linked to immune system disorders I don't think it would hurt to just take a multivitamin.

This logic would abandon all forms of prenatal supplements as well...

Take a men's vitamin and a fish oil capsule every day. I don't consider it a waist. For one, I don't eat right and two, my triglycerides are high.

It's the minerals you have to watch. Many of the multi mineral pill manufacturers seem to a take a "the more metals, the better" approach throwing in metals no one needs.

To be fair, you do need those metals, just very tiny amounts that you'll likely pick up in your daily diet.

Meh, NYTimes? PBS?! Not buying it. But will shall see this summer when I get another blood test and see if my triglycerides are under control.
It should help your HDL. Losing fat and improving your diet will go a long way to improving your tri's.
Triglycerides are important to human life and are the main form of fat in the body. When you think of fat developing and being stored in your hips or belly, you're thinking of triglycerides.

That's a really misleading article. It's basically saying that people's health is getting so shitty that it's just better to put them on a statin once they get to the point of needing intervention. It was performed on people that were already at risk.

Fish oil by itself isn't going to prevent heart attacks or heart disease. It's one tiny piece in a very complicated formula of risk factors. There are many benefits to it still that the article really glosses over.

I swear by fish oil for the joint health boost it seems to provide. I'm pushing 40 and do a lot of running. I really feel like fish oil keeps my joints in a lot better shape. I didn't notice much of a difference at all with Glucosamine/Chondriton. But I don't seem to have nearly as many aches/pains/cracks/pops in my knees, hands, wrists and feet than before I started taking it.

B vitamins (Riboflavin in particular) do some interesting things to your pee. High amounts of them make it look like you are whizzing Mountain Dew.

So at least it's interesting and expensive urine.

That happens to me with my vitamin, if I don't drink enough water it is neon color... Turns out it does have a crazy amount of Riboflavin in it:

I only take 1 out of the recommended 3 per day (so 1/3 all of the values for my intake), but it still is a lot. Been wondering if I should switch to something else...

The issue is that the fish oil in a tablet isn't necessarily "good" fish oil. Fish oils are good due to their abundance of unsaturated fats. However, those unsaturated fats are also prone to oxidation (which gives contributes to that rancid fish smell). If a company wraps crappy fish oil in a tablet, you can't tell if you're getting crappy, oxidized oil or good stuff.

A relative bought me some of that stuff.

The label says "Fermented Cod Liver Oil contains naturally occurring vitamins A and D. The amounts of these nutrients will vary."

So that statement would include "none at all" as an as-advertised quantity.
The "Supplement facts" only lists the calories and fat content, and doesn't even mention anything about the alleged vitamins.

I'll have to see if that Frontline episode is available on PBS's website.

I'm sure the relative would just say that the episode is scare-tactic stuff put out there by the big bad drug industry. (Not that I myself have got much love for the pharmaceutical industry in the US, but that seems a bit much.)

You do know that running puts a lot of stress on yourself, right. I just go on walks.

You do know that your body is designed to handle that stress and adapts to lower the set point, right? I just go on longer runs.

Discussions here are so much different than in H&F...
