Video IN Video Out

You can bring in a video source or send it out of your PC. Like a camcorder to PC or PC to HDTV. Personally I've found it useless cos I have neither.

ViVo = Video Input Video Output

This means you can use an S-video or a composite input or output on your video card to watch video on your system, or watch your system on a TV.

Usually requires a dongle.

You can technically watch TV with it if you have an external tuner such as a VCR or something but for the most part camcorders or something is its main use. Overall its not very useful IMO.

You'll need to install your cards "wdm drivers" for the VIVO features to function. Then you can connect to a video source (camcorder, VCR, STB) and use Windows Movie Maker to test if its setup correctly.

vivo features are nearly useless without a tuner onboard. also instead of movie maker and other such crap software i recommend virtual dub or virtual vcr

The tuner doesn't have to be onboard to be useful, a VCR for example usually has a tuner that works fine. VIVO cards are also useful for Console input as well as a variety of video inputs like analog camcorders for capture...hardly useless.

Windows movie maker is aso perfectly acceptable to test the functionality of the capture device and is included with the OS. There are plenty of decent 3rd party video capture softwares.

VIVO cards add video-in capability (whilst keeping the video-out aka TV-out practically every card has).

This is useful for viewing the output of a satellite or cable receiver box on your computer monitor, for playing a game console on the computer monitor, for viewing stuff from your VCR, and also for transfer of videotapes to DVD.

All assuming your monitor does not have a video input for such things. My dell 2000FP is four years old and does a decent job with Composite.

Of course, that wouldn't allow you to "capture", or just view a window on your desktop.

I use VIVO all the time. Capture all my old VHS and VHS-C tapes to convert to DVD. I used to use it to watch TV from my VCR abd LD player but since I got an extenal TV tuner I dont need my PC at all anymore cuz my 2007FPW has Svideo directly on the monitor. Still capturing video tho. Lots of old tapes.
