VLC Media Player won't play DVDs

Hello,

VLC 2.1.1 (64-bit) on Windows 7, 64 bit.

It just won't play any dvds. The Windows Media Player plays them fine. But VLC has better and louder sound. I have googled this issue but to no avail.

Have removed and reinstalled VLC as well. No difference.

Any suggestions?

I dont know, i dont use VLC for anything but FLV flash files.

If anyone knows how to get .flv files grabbed from youtube, and etc, from using browser addons, as for example: "Video DownloadHelper" for firefox.... to work with ffdshow or mpc, that would be great cause i would then not need VLC at all.

but... it's very likely the only reason VLC sounds louder for your DVD's is because of an "Audio Normalization" function, that i assume VLC has? like i said i dont use it much... but i do know ffdshow does this aswell, and possibly better.. if you do try ffdshow its in > Audio Config/mixer/Normalization.

I don't know if Win Media player has a normalization function for audio, in this day in age one may assume every modern player would have the function. But I'v never used WMV.

there maybe other development forks out there better for modern 64bit OS's but im not familiar. I'm on winXP 32bit. and that one has always been very reliable on my system

Using version 2.1.1 64 bit and Win 7 64 bit with no problems. I downloaded it from here: http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player-64-bit/3000-13632_4-75761094.html
When you open VLC, under the Media tab, pick Open disc, make sure the Disc Device is your DVD player, also try checking No Disc Menus.

it should work. The audio quality is the same btw, you just can't judge quality well at different volume levels (you'll pretty much always think the louder one sounds better). The reason for the volume being lowered is because of normalization. When you use windows media player, there is lowered volume when downmixing to prevent clipping. This isn't even done by windows media player itself, it's the operating system that does the downmix and normalization actually. If you had vlc output 5.1 channels to windows 7, it would probably also sound quiet. Instead, I'm guessing vlc does the downmix and normalization itself rather than using the operating system's one, hence the volume difference.

I have also windows7 64 bit and i use VLC 2.1.1 rincewind.
I can watch DVD video's without a problem.

While using process explorer, i found out that VLC is installed in the x86 folder.
I assume i have the 32 bit x86 version.
Maybe the 64bit version of VLC has some bug since it won't play dvd's on your pc.
