The original offer email was sent to VMware registrants, and stated very clearly "if YOU refer a friend, you both get it".

We check referrals against the database. If you weren't on the original offer email, you don't get the referral privileges, and of course we're checking against self-referrals.

only "experimental" support for DirectX9 (or 8)....

anyone know if they'll offer a (free) patch/upgrade for "real" support for DirectX, when it happens? I'd love for the win98se virtual machine to support dx8. (no win98 flames, please)

free is a very good price!

if you're going to run a windows "guest" on a windows "host" I think Microsoft's virtual PC works better.
VMWare works better if you're going to use linnux as a host or guest though.

How about some of these tours make it to KC or St. Louis or OKC? Are tech companys scared of the bible belt?

Rgreen83,

I don't think they are scared of the bible belt. Most companies want to present to as many people as possible within their budget. Usually the regions with smaller populations are left out.

If you know a large number of people will attend one of these seminar, you should contact them and suggest they come to your city.

Just came back from the one here in Raleigh. Spent most of the time talking about GSX and ESX, not touching one bit on workstation. But I did get a coupon though and a free pass to the U.S. Open (a random drawing).

Did you leave with workstation 5? Or is that what the coupon is for? If that's what the coupon is for, do you pay for shipping? other costs?

was it a usefull technical demonstration? or a high-level sales pitch?

(signed up for tomorrow)

A coupon with a code for an online download. The download is fairly painless, 57-67 megs.

I'd say both. It's pretty amazing what they can do now with VMware. This is really a technical sales pitch to technical people The guy that gave the talk in Minneapolis was an engineer, so he can actually address the technical questions people had. It wasn't your typical sales-guy talk where they spout out a lot of bull and do a lot hand waving.

Attended Chicago and got the code. On our way out, I overheard some of the folks discussing the name tags. Apparently they had seen the same one several times or could otherwise tell they were "faked". I don't tink it is quite Fort Know, but when 2x pople showed today, they scrambled to get things going. When they were done giving out codes, they likely will revise the sign in process. For those who didn't register legitimately (I simply do NOT understand why you wouldn't), good luck getting in.

As a side note, buy stock. The Windows virtual machine functions don;t seem to touch ESX on a bare metal server. This stuff is simply to "geeky-cool" to be passed up. For development of apps, upgrades and rollouts, and (most importantly) disaster recovery ESX rocks. With hardware vendors using VMware as part of the solutions they provide, it certainly adds credence to the package.

Workstation do the same thing as ESX and GSX server. The real difference is how the three use hardware resources and workstation does not have a remote management console.

I went to the Chicago one, I wonder if the codes are the same cuz they just handed out strips of paper with attendee codes on them...

Mine starts with BLB, ends with KIE

Thanks for the info guys. Im not going to even waste my time if all they give you is a stupid coupon code to download the software. What a bunch of cheap skates.

I was expecting a retail hard copy of the program. Looks like its a waste of time going. Thanks for the info.

And why is a CD better than a downloadable copy? It's only 57-67 megs, and you wind up with a fullly licensed version of Vmware workstation. Does a shiny CD really make you feel better?, because the software is the same as it would be on a CD when you download it. Or did you expect to sell this on ebay?

Wish I had known about this sooner, as the San Jose one was today. Would have been worth it for a free copy of the software.

I hate that I didn't see this sooner. It would have been a nice day to drive the company car 100 miles, but it's too late. Both cities near me have already closed registration.

BTW....VMWare is the wave of the future. Many admins are starting to use virtualized server farms to cut hardware costs. We're looking into it here to help reduce server room heat and power consumption.
