VNC + Linux NOW WORKING!

I would like to have vncserver setup on my mandrake 8.1 file server but it's not working. I downloaded the source from their site and decompressed it, read the docs (not insightful) but can't start the service.

I copied the scripts to /usr/local/bin and these are the errors i get when i run them:


vncserver - "couldn't find Xvnc on your path"
Xvnc - "
Fatal server error:Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again."


If i remove ".X0-lock" and run Xvnc again i get:

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Did you do the full install or just copy vncserver to /usr/bin?

i just uncompressed it, the scripts were right there and none of the docs said anything about installing...

I found a copy of mandrake appz (disk 2 of the install) and it had vnc on it in the form of an i586.rpm so i installed that ran the vncserver script again and it claims it's running... i check the log and it says xrdb can't be found, which leads to no .Xresources in /root

Now my systems a mess... i have like 3 versions of vnc installed/uncompressed... time to clean house

Clean up all the mess then install the rpm:

rpm -ivh vncblahblha.i586.rpm

and then start vncserver

well, after having much trouble removing and re-installing the package(s) i got it to work ... kinda.

I installed vnc server and managed to start it without problems, however, i still can't connect to it. The process is running so i'm not sure what's going on now. I've tried connecting via IP and network name, neither works, just says failed to connect to server

Based upon the *.RPM it looks as though you're in Redhat/Mandrake...might want to check firewall settings?

The system is mandrake, but that machine isn't setup for firewalling and i doubt it would be setup to perform firewalling right out of the box, i'll check to make sure though.

I do run a firewall on my lan via RH 7.1 but i'm trying to vnc from within the firewall (192.168.x.x)... i can vnc to my 2k box from my mac / linux machines but somethings definitely wrong on my mandrake box.

FIXED!

I dug through the docs a little more and found that apparently it's compname: display# (server:2)
