This guy gets it, although I am a big fan of Tito's Vodka. It's really really good stuff and I usually pick between Tito's or Russian Standard.

There is also a super market in the LA area (maybe elsewhere too?) called Jons and they sell it for $18 for a 1.75L! I also own stock in CEDC, which Russian Standard has a 30% share in. Win/Win all around!

FWIW there was an expose on TV a few years ago. Blind tests with Vodka showed that people had no idea what they were drinking. The cheap stuff was as good as the expensive and visa-versa.

they had a vodka taste test on mythbusters once with a pro in as a taste tester. they had 3-4 types from dirt cheap to expensive and refiltered all at several different amounts. As you got to the multi-filter attempts the tester couldn't tell the top from the bottom brand.

Woah. A thread about Tito's. Me and my buddies started buying it because it was cheap but after drinking it its much better than pretty much everything besides belvedere. Just killed a handle last night

Sort of makes you wonder why the bottom quality ones don't just filter their stuff better. $1 worth of filtering would make it taste so much better.

Activated charcoal is dirt cheap, so it's not like removing that taste would be difficult or costly.

Girl who works at the liquor store was tending bar when they did the same type of test, turned out people could not tell what brand they were drinking at all....

The Costco Kirkland vodka is basically grey goose cloned. $25 ish for a 1.75. Very smooth possibly better than goose honestly

Just going to take a stab in the dark and guess that all you've ever really tasted is grey goose and costco kirkland.

While most of it tastes "the same" I've found that I've felt much rougher after drinking a bottle over the weekend with the cheaper brands.

The same weekend with brands like Grey Goose or Ketel One doesn't leave me feeling so rough.

I think of it as a lot easier hangover tax.

Vodka snobbery isn't ridiculous. The actual best brands are something like 30-40 bucks. Not some crazy scotch that's 100s of dollars. There is most certainly a difference between bottom and top shelf. The differences aren't HUGE but they are definitely there.

As for my faves:

American - Tito's. As for flavored - 360 double chocolate. This with expensive non-concentrate cranberry juice is unbelievable.
Russian - Zyr. Tastes like drinking glass. I'm worried about opening up my Imperia, a real premium russian standard. I almost don't want to experience it.

I'm telling you guys who haven't tried their citron, raspberry or kaffir lime. Perfectly nice served neat.
Independent and family owned out in California - can pick it up at total wine/bevmo.

They've also done some work with these people who make some very unique and excellent spirits

http://www.stgeorgespirits.com/our-spirits/

If you like smokiness in your beer/liquor/liquors

you should try and find a bottle of their Qi Black

Qi Black transforms cocktails into potions, adding an intriguing smokiness, exotic floral notes, and a whisper of honey. As a sipping spirit, Qi Black smolders with the complexity and long, earthy finish of an exceptional single-malt Scotch.

Qi Black is artfully distilled in small batches using cedar-smoked Lapsang Souchong tea leaves, wildflower honey, and rare spices in a base of barrel-aged brandy.

vodka snobbery is ridiculous. most vodka is distilled by ADM and conagra. all assholes like puff daddy do is run it through a massive brita filter a couple times. and then sell it for $40. the fact that people pay as much for vodka as for aged spirits is mass stupidity. and if you're just mixing the heck out of it might as well get everclear and just use half as much.

if i buy vodka, i usually i buy tito's because it's local.
I agree

Vodka snobs are funny. They probably don't even realize that the original vodka, samogen, looks nothing like the current crop of vodka, and certainly is not this clear, "pure" spirit, and is actually more similar to whiskey or mead.

The current standard was adopted at the turn of the 20th century, and pretty much ignores the long cultural history of traditional of what was once samogen.

I've had titos and the usual belvedere, ketel one , Smirnoff , crystalvhead, etc. I can't claim to be some alcohol snob but I just want something smoother that doesn't give me a headache and the Costco stuff is pretty good for that . I'm guessing you must be more educated on alcohol than I am.

Of course I'm also guessing you are a condescending jackass who must feel good about himself for being a snob in a tech forum about alcohol. It really shows in your post quite well.

Zin, a pure hearts cut of the distillate from a very clean, cool fermentation with lager yeast, or a similar approach, usually will not result in a headache. Often, it's the lower end fusels or other impurities that cause headaches.

Dehydration causes headaches.

Well, yes, but my point is that despite the standards of identity requiring a neutral spirit, distillation means that trace amounts of differences do matter in terms of how the body responds to them.
