$16.58 is the base price I'm assuming

How much extra in surcharges/fees?

This could be perfect for our needs.

I bought the year of service for $199. I was billed for $199, nothing more. I got the two phones and they are not that great compared to the 5.8ghz phone I currently use. The service impressed me so much I am in the process of porting my Vonage #'s over right now.

That's my major concern, what if they go out of business in 3 months?

Vonage will be around for a long time but this company who knows?

I tried Vonage and the service sucked! You would think you could have decent quality with a 4mb cable connection!

Ok, just signed up! I called them to see why they don't have my area code. They said that they made a corporate decision to only offer area codes to the cities that they could get 911 service. I can respect that decision. They also told me that if I didn't like the service I could cancel in 31 days and keep the free phones... Now that's too good to pass up. I've been sick off BellSouth ripping me off for a while now, so I just signed up and got an ATL number until my area code becomes available.

Am I correct that you can't switch your current phone number to this service?

You may be able to. Check for availability on their site. If they can provide your area code, you can tell them to contact you to see if your number is portable.

I am hoping this is a good company and will be around for a while. I plan on changing over once I get my income tax refund back (wife is out of work right now and can't afford the $199 up front, will later though).

Wow, this is tempting. I'm paying over $40/month for my local phone service with 3 way calling and caller ID right now.

Is there anything that differs this phone from a "standard" phone using RJ-11? I have an existing vtech 4 handset unit I'd rather use.

Look at my previous post... They are only providing service to areas where they can get true 911 service.

No, this is just the promo offer. The "gizmo" converts the broadband digital VoIP signal to an analog signal which will work with any phone. So you can use your existing phone wiring by getting your current provider to *completely* disconnect you from the switchbox outside. Then just run a phone line from the gizmo to one of the phone jacks in your house.

I subscribed to VoicePulse a couple months back and couldn't be happier with their service so far. Researched at DSLREPORTS.COM. You gotta dig but reviews of most VOIP companies are there. I ran it in parallel with Bellsouth to test and make sure it worked ok.

I dug up the address: http://www.dslreports.com/gbu

Bellsouth local was about $45/month and I couldn't call Adelphia across Boca Raton or it was long distance, geesh. I have canceled and am only using Bellsouth DSL, which is very good.

VoicePulse is $14.99/month for 200 minutes of long distance and unlimited local. My local calling area is the eastern half of Florida from south of Orlando to Key West. I have tried calling Key West locally and verified it works. They also have unlimited for $24.95 as I recall. If we run short of minutes we use cell phone minutes. My wife calls Thailand with a calling card for a few cents per minute and it works with this system too using the cards 800 number.

Which ever company you choose, I'll bet the features and rates will be excellent compared to POTS.

You will need to program your local police # into speed dial, 911 may not work. I would keep it plugged into a UPS otherwise if your power is out your phone is dead too.

There's no doubt that VoIP will win out over POTS any day of the week when it comes to features and price. As far as 911 service, see my previous posts. SunRocket made a corporate decision to only offer to areas that they could guarantee 911 service.

The great thing about SunRocket is that you can prepay for an entire year @ $16.58/month. And if you don't like it, you've got a 31-day money-back guarantee plus you're not stuck in a contract. So after that, no cancellation fees and you get refunded for the rest of the months you haven't used.

And with the free phone offer, you're basically paying $10.75/month. (That's using Etronics price of $69.99.)
