Day 33

Final thoughts:

This works - and a great price.

Is it "as good" as a land line. Not quite. A few click/pops, sometimes a long time to get a ring after dialing, etc. And some degradation when I'm really pushing data back and forth on the computer.

But when I compare $40 a month for my SBC landline vs. $199/yr ($17/month) for Sunrocket - and it INCLUDES unlimited long distance in US/Canada and cheap international...

I think I have to give this a big thumbs up! Overall, I find the conversations to be fine, and I only am critical when I "think about it" - I find the sound quality better than my cell phone!

I have not noticed any of the "funny" things happening to others ? i.e.long connection times, clicking and pop noises or echo. (For the first day or so I noticed the echo, however, it never came back.) Voice quality rivals the POTS, IMHO.

As the Gizmo is behind the router and the router is hooked to the cable modem with the gold plan, I don't notice any subjective difference between 3MB - 4MB - 5MB or 6MB. They all seem fast enough for my purposes (although being able to D/L the latest Linux DVD distro in 5 seconds would be nice, I only occasionally really need anything at the bleeding edge). I'll just suffer until FIOS is in the wall.

Micro$oft has just committed to VOIP and to me that means...sell your Baby Bell stock!

Completed the form on the website and emailed an html version of my Verizon bill to them...should I be expecting any confirmation from them the process is underway or will it just happen ~3 weeks from now?

I got a confirmation email after a couple days saying - this will happen in "up to" 20 days. exactly 20 days later it automatically switched.

Anybody have a problem with the voicemail volume being too low? My greeting is barely audible, and so are the voicemail files I receive from them. Anybody?

Listening to it online, the volume sounds low (might be my computer set-up).
Over the phone, both greeting volume and message volume is good.

I oredered this and when it came everything worked
Then why am I posting lol
I have 3 mb down and 256k up
after install I had 256k up and 168k down
hmmm...they tried the flash 3 times no luck.

I have 3 computers running dc projects, i d/l and upload constantly (web page editing on 3 sites)

I was using a netgear rp614 router. It only worked when it went cable modem, gizmo, router. I could access the network and the gizmo fine this way but limited to 256k.

I bought a used Linksys BEFSR41 v3 Router. Not only did I regain almost all my internet speed, but everything is clearer. no echoes, no distortion even when all computers are updating and I am d/l.

I am very happy as this saves me over 100.00 a month on my phone bill. plus its paid in full for a year

You're saving $100 EVERY MONTH!?

I thought saving $25 per month was good ($40 phone bill now gone - $15 new charge)

I thought my saving ~$10 was good.... (~$26 before, ~$16 now... (but that $26 was no LD and no cool features except call waiting))

edit: though I probably would have switched for $0 savings, just to rid myself of the hell I call qwest

I'm still waiting for my port from Vonage to go through. I really feel like stabbing Vonage in the head with a rusty pitchfork with all the grief they've given me on this port. I should have been ported over to SunRocket a month ago, but either Vonage or Choice One (their rate center here in Indy) won't let my #'s go. Of course Vonage and Choice One both deny that they're causing the problems, and both swear that it should be portable to Sunrocket. Somebodys' lying to me.....

Lets all share our test results here. This is a test the tech. support people had me run to check my VoIP connection quality

http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip

My results have varied ALOT. Everything from 1.0mb to 3.8mb downstream
Upstream is always about 400-500k.
Quality of service varies ALOT between 30-90%

I'm on Cox cable in Orange County, CA. I just got a new modem and the Cox guy came out and patched up a few lines to boost my signal strength. We'll see if that helps. I was the one getting pops on my phone calls earlier.

Hey guys. I have been checking up on VoIP and was close to making a decision when I got a mailer from sunrocket with a promo code similar to the front page deal, bascially:

Annual Rate $199 ($16.58/month) and two free Uniden phones
Promo Code: SRAyuhk

Thought you guys might be interested. It is a limited offer it should be good for a few months.

ps. I e-mailed myself the code to potentially orderat work and so the mailer is at home, so when I get back I'll make sure to double check the deal and I'll let you know if anything is different. ENJOY!

That's the same deal they have been running for a while now. They update the promo code when the old one expires.

Mine's great - I get almost full download/upload promised without a phone in use, and what I would consider normal lowering of speed when I'm using the phone.

I have my gizmo set up in front of the Lynksys router now. The router is set up on DHCP for IP config. The default IP address is 192.168.2.1 the gizmo IP is 192.168.251.1. I would like to be able to see the other PC's on my network. Since I am now behind the gizmo, I can no longer see the other PCs.

My question for the network gurus is, can I change the IP of the gizmo or will the IP of the lynksys bounce against the gizmo if I they are the same?

Thanks in advance

if you have the gizmo in front of the router, it should not have any effect on your network. Are your other comptuers getting the proper ip?

I'm looking to port forwarding issues now - ttown I think addressed some issues, here are more - does anyone have a "here's what you do" to make all this work? (for example, I'm now digging for the gizmo's IP address and password again.)

Signed up for Sunrocket annual service on Feb. 7th, and received my gizmo and Uniden phones exactly one week later, on Feb. 14th. Incoming calls on both numbers were working the very next day after submitting an order - I checked it by forwarding calls to my POTS line. During sign up it indicated that service is unavailable for my current home phone number, even though SR provides phone numbers in my area code. I called them, and apparently it was because of E911 availability. They assured me that regular 911 is still gonna work, so I went ahead and signed up.

Setting up the gizmo was really easy. I plugged it BEFORE my Netgear router, only because I'm using some applications (remote administration, p2p, online gaming etc) that could generate heavy upload traffic from time to time, and would like to be able to utilize gizmo's QoS. I read on this forum, and on dslreports forum about decrease in download speed some people experienced when Gizmo is plugged in in front of the router, but apparently in my setup it didn't affect the speed a bit! I tested it with TestMy.net and SpeakEasy speed tests - and both up and down speeds were exactly the same - before and after installing the gizmo (~3000 down and 360 up). My firmware version as showed on gizmo's setup page is:
Application Code Version: SIP version 4.50 US (APP 27 )
Downloader Code Version: 4.50 US (LDR 27 )
CPU Hw Version: 20.

I set the gizmo to give static LAN IP to my router, so when gizmo reboots I will not loose my network connection. With gizmo before the router I also have to setup port forwarding for some apps to work properly on my computers. Since my router already has port forwarding set up the way it has to be, I just decided to make gizmo fully "transparent" for incoming requests, and forward all ports to the router. With exception of ports reserved for CPE (68, 5060, 16384-16399), gizmo allowed me to do that, but it didn't work - none of the ports were actually forwarded. Then I came across this thread, and found a few messages saying that port forwarding feature on the gizmo does not work at all! That was really disappointing, especially considering the fact that I need port forwarding for the same apps that were the reason to plug gizmo in front of the router in the first place. Well, I was ready to give up, and move the gizmo after the router, but after reading that SR uses port 80 to access your gizmo from outside for servicing purposes, I decided to try and exclude port 80 (and for the heck of it port 113 too, since gizmo responded to the port scan on this port) from the list of forwarded ports. Amazingly, it worked! So now I have all ports forwarded to my router, except CPE reserved ports, 80 and 113, all my apps work fine, and I can dynamic rate control (QoS) on the gizmo. I tested the call quality while uploading on full speed, and the voice quality was not affected at all. Surely, upload speed decreased from about 300 to 190 kbps while on the call.

Now, can anyone tell me exactly what are disadvatages of having gizmo before the router from the security point of view? Is it more vulnerable to outside attacks then a normal router? If so, is there any way to protect it, other then placing a router in front of it? BTW, I tried to change default password on the gizmo, and it worked for a while - until the gizmo rebooted itself. After rebooting it kept all the settings I changed, but the password was reset to default value again...

After testing the service for 2 days I'd say I'm pretty happy with it. Did not test yet if 911 works though. Made several local and interstate calls, including one another SR subscriber line, regular POTS lines and Vonage lines, and the quality was excellent every time on both ends. Next weekend I'm gonna make a couple of international calls, and if it also works good I will keep the service.

Also, the free Uniden 2.4 GHz phones from SR do not seem to interfere at all with my wireless 2.4 GHz network. I have my router set up to work on channel 11, and didn't notice any interference problems making calls and accessing network from my wireless clients at the same time.

The only issues I really want SunRocket to fix/improve asap are:
1) Message Waiting Indicator doesn't work. Not a big deal though considering that you can setup multiple different notifications when voicemail arrives;
2) Name on CallerID doesn't work most of the time - only works if you already entered this phone into your contact list, or the call is from another SR subscriber;
3) Call Log doesn't show duration of the calls - might be important if you make a lot of international calls;
4) Lack of functionality in Contact List - I need to enter and manage about 300 phone numbers, including internationals, and oh boy - I wish I could do it in more conveninent way...

oops here is the "here is more" part of the last message.

based on this, i'm telling the gizmo to forward:

1-67, 69-79, 81-112, 114-5059, 5061-16383, 16400-65535

sound right?

With the gizmo set before your router, you shouldn't have to forward anything.
Port forwarding may only be an issue if you're running some services behind the gizmo on ports that the gizmo use -- which might include some games, web-server, or voip-like services.

If you log into the gizmo, somewhere there's a note about it using ports 68, 113, 5060 and 16384 thru 16399. You don't need to explicitly forward all the others -- it'll do that on it's own, just like any 'ol router.

People have mentioned that SR uses port 80 for firmware updates. I've observed that when you plug in the gizmo from a cold state, it connects to a SR webserver (port 80) and gets some configuration files (and probably firmware updates when necessary).
However, I do NOT observe an actual service running on that port.
I'm guessing that when people call SR to initiate a firmware upgrade, what SR probably does is place a call to the gizmo-phone and enters a 'secret' number that causes the gizmo to RESET -- thus, making the gizmo re-request it's configuration files (and probably firmware). Someone in this thread mentioned one of the 'secret' numbers to get your gizmo to reset, and I came across several others when I skimmed through the firmware.rom. Mostly they're just different levels of "resetting" the gizmo.

I've monitored the gizmo activity and have seen NO use of ports 68 or 113. But I'm not saying they aren't used sometime, somewhere. (Maybe the message light?? dunno, since i have just a plain old phone attached to the gizmo)

Anyway.... ImSeeker, it sounds like you did a bunch of redundant configuring. No harm, I guess... unless you're running a web-server (port 80) -- in which case, you've blocked it.

All I know is that when I use bittorrent now (bittornado) I never get a green light anymore. Always yellow.

(Even with the "forwarding" I tried to do.)

I have

cable modem --- gizmo --- router

What do you get when you run the command "ipconfig -all" from a DOS prompt?
Oh, wait, Windows refers to the DOS prompt as Command Prompt.

That might be because it's not DOS, it is a command prompt

I don't use bittornado, so I don't know what the lights mean. I'm assuming yellow means "slow" (or 'CAUTION: the mpaa is watching!' ).
My guess is that you may need to fiddle with the QoS settings of the gizmo.
I forget where in all the web-admin stuff the settings are, but it's not terribly difficult to find. Just get in there an hunt around.
The gizmo's IP address would be the gateway address of your router (command/cmd prompt: 'ipconfig /all' -- look for 'gateway') Then, from your browser, http://_whatever_that_address_is_, password = 'welcome'
If bittornado uses ports 16384 thru 16399 (or 5060), then you're either SOL or phone-quality will be extremely poor -- or probably unusable. If that's the case, you'd need to move the gizmo to the other side of your router.
edit: maybe there's some settings in bittornado you can change to exclude using ports in that range??

I'd bet messing with the QoS settings on the gizmo will fix you.
Maybe check dslreports.com to see if someone has mentioned minimum QoS settings for good voice quality....

good luck
