No, this is just the promo offer. The "gizmo" converts the broadband digital VoIP signal to an analog signal which will work with any phone. So you can use your existing phone wiring by getting your current provider to *completely* disconnect you from the switchbox outside. Then just run a phone line from the gizmo to one of the phone jacks in your house.[/quote]Originally posted by: SoulAssassin
Is there anything that differs this phone from a "standard" phone using RJ-11? I have an existing vtech 4 handset unit I'd rather use.
I couldn't get a local area code so I got the closest one I could get for now. So, yes, whoever calls you would be making a LD call to that area code. Not too big of a deal since they could call you on their cell and then you could call them right back. Once they get my local area code, I can update my number for free.Originally posted by: WBStrip
If you cannot get a local area code then when your family and friends would be making a long distance call right
It's just a matter of preference. I read alot of reviews were Packet8 people didn't like the service and wanted to switch. I haven't personally used them, so I can't speak on their behalf. The benefit to paying for the year in advance is that you are locking in a low rate of $16.xx/month. With the lawsuits going against VoIP services, most of the rates are starting to go up b/c they are being forced to charge more taxes... and pay for court costs.Originally posted by: Macro2
Why is this any better than Packet8 for 19.95/mo. No year in advance. You get the terminal adapter free at CompUSA after rebate and your first 2 months free plus a portable phone.

How does this FREE extra number work?
You basically get a FREE totally separate unique phone number?
I really hope service doesn't go down the drain and they don't go out of business.

Nah we could actually use the phones assuming they don't interfere with our 802.11b network.

No. Just run a regular RJ-11 phone line from the gizmo into any phone jack inside your house. The switchbox outside is what your local phone carrier hooks into to give you service. When you cancel your service, they should completely disconnect from your outside switchbox. Make sure they do. B/c if they don't, that's a 51V signal your phone wiring that will fry the gizmo.
