How does this FREE extra number work?

You basically get a FREE totally separate unique phone number?

I really hope service doesn't go down the drain and they don't go out of business.

You get a signature number. It's a separate number with it's own voicemail and everything. I guess its like having two lines in your house. I wish I could use a different area code with it.

EDIT: I just saw that someone called them and was able to use a different area code for this number.

i don't see anything about the free phones on the website, do you have to enter a promotional code or something to receive them?

umm... yes. They aren't allowed here, so do a search for it... or check over at f a t w a l l e t forums.

BTW, it looks like someone got a new coupon code. Maybe they are extending the offer? Check the last page (9) on the FW thread.

No, this is just the promo offer. The "gizmo" converts the broadband digital VoIP signal to an analog signal which will work with any phone. So you can use your existing phone wiring by getting your current provider to *completely* disconnect you from the switchbox outside. Then just run a phone line from the gizmo to one of the phone jacks in your house.[/quote]

Cool, so if I have a regular wired phone at another point in my house (have on in the kitchen I hardly use) what would I need to do? Run an RJ-11 from the gizmo to the box outside my house?

No. Just run a regular RJ-11 phone line from the gizmo into any phone jack inside your house. The switchbox outside is what your local phone carrier hooks into to give you service. When you cancel your service, they should completely disconnect from your outside switchbox. Make sure they do. B/c if they don't, that's a 51V signal your phone wiring that will fry the gizmo.

Thanks, my girlfriend's been frustrated with our vonage service, and i've been eyeing new cordless phones. Hopefully this will satisfy both our desires.

Why is this any better than Packet8 for 19.95/mo. No year in advance. You get the terminal adapter free at CompUSA after rebate and your first 2 months free plus a portable phone.

I couldn't get a local area code so I got the closest one I could get for now. So, yes, whoever calls you would be making a LD call to that area code. Not too big of a deal since they could call you on their cell and then you could call them right back. Once they get my local area code, I can update my number for free.

It's just a matter of preference. I read alot of reviews were Packet8 people didn't like the service and wanted to switch. I haven't personally used them, so I can't speak on their behalf. The benefit to paying for the year in advance is that you are locking in a low rate of $16.xx/month. With the lawsuits going against VoIP services, most of the rates are starting to go up b/c they are being forced to charge more taxes... and pay for court costs.

Also, SunRocket gives you everything for free w/o worring about Rebates.

Rossman,
There is only one line but you can receive calls on another # of your choosing.
I don't know of a way to make an outgoing call on the other #...anyone else know for sure?

Obviously this company is expanding, making a year deal to raise money. I wish them luck but Packet8 (and Vonage} are already all over the US and Canada. So I'll stick with Packet8. Would like to see some servers put in Mexico though.

I've seen two different coupon codes, but they look like the same deal... you could always fleabay the phones. Just do it before Feb 18.

Nah we could actually use the phones assuming they don't interfere with our 802.11b network.

That's my problem right there... the phones will interfere with my 802.11g network... 802.11g uses the same 2.4 gigahertz frequency that 802.11b does...

they also do no offer service in my area.
You know what, I got vonaga, and I have the quality turned all the way down to the lowest setting and it still sounds like a very good cell phone. So I am happy. It is my main line.

We live in a small apartment complex, how would I verify if our landline has been disconnected?

Can I just hookup a phone and no dialtone = safe assumption it's disconnected?

You still have to be careful even when there is no dialtone... So, hookup a corded phone and first make sure there is no dialtone. Really there should be no change at all when you plug it in. I've got a corded phone that has a simple light on it so you can somewhat see the keypad when you pickup. If you've got one of those, then you could check for the light to stay off.

The best way to check is to use a multimeter. You can take a phone recepticle off the wall and check for DC voltage on the contacts. There is a specific color code to wiring phones, but I don't remember it off hand b/c most "electricians" don't follow it. Basically, if you look at the back of a phone jack there are 4 wires... 2 for line one and 2 for line two. So look for a DC voltage potential across each combination of the two. (The two in the middle are for line one and the two on the outside are for line two. <- Thats if you look at the contact on the actual phone jack.) Also, ask the phone company what exactly they did when they disconnected you.

Hope that helps. Better safe than sorry.

Also you can check this PDF for more info.

Sure, but you can't use the existing phone wiring in your house for VoIP since you need to use it for DSL. No big deal since they are giving you free cordless phones anyway.
