What doesnt the DoS setting do?

There was an article in today's Washington Post, Business section, that the FCC yesterday voted to require providers of Internet phones to provide 911 service within 120 days. I know that SunRocket already offers it. Has anyone tested their 911 service?

Yes, 911 works fine in the Tampa Bay area. I tested it not just for myself but other people I signed onto it. Some people reported that it doesn't work for them, but SR has committed to getting them onto full E-911 within 30 days, according to a press release they released yesterday.

A customer of mine received an e-mail from Sunrocket yesterday asking for verification of her address for 911 purposes because her address didn't come up right for them. Her 911 works, but they wanted to be absolutely sure of the address that is being shown to the 911 operator. She mentioned that in her area her zip code changed twice in a row recently, so that probably was what confused the system. But it shows that they are actively working to get everybody who is currently not on E-911 onto it, that their self-imposed 30-day deadline is probably going to be kept.

I just got home and had 15 minutes to make an important call... my SR account wasn't working and I missed the call!

I went online and found this:

SunRocket is experiencing short interruptions
in service in some areas. We apologize for the
inconvenience.

I love my SR account, but sometimes it gets really hard to explain to the wife why I turned off our traditional phone service!

C'mon, SunRocket!!! Get it together!!!!!

Sadly, it's not just them, and not just this time. But it's cheap and you get a lot of features, so if you can live with that then I guess it's ok.

One day these guys will get a sniff, but not unless they survive the inevitable VOIP shakeout.

I tested mine yesterday (Cincinnati area) and 911 said all they got was wireless caller and my number. I called SR and was told that E911 was not in my area even though when I signed up they said it was and I registered for it.

How are you supposed to find out whether 911 works correctly? I called and immediately told the operator that this was a test call to see whether they had the correct address and phone number, only to be told that 911 "isn't for playing games or testing". Do I have to have an officer come to the house and call?

Sounds like you got a rude dispatcher, mine was kind and understanding and said that if I called with a real emergency I would have to be able to give the address and not just dial 911 and lay the phone down. I have instructed my wife of this so we know the procedure until SR gets my E911 working then I will test it again.

Rude dispatcher. Testing is okay here in Kansas City.

MIddle of the night testing might be preferred, but not Fri., Sat., or Sunday nights.

I just saw this in a thread on DSLReports and thought it would be interesting to some here:

Hey guys, I just found out this...

If you have SR, you can log in to to your GIZMO with the password "io$c6%2".

This will open up LOTS of HIDDEN menu items. Most of these dont make sense to me... maybe some experts in this forum can figure out...

Now, if you want the latest firmware, just download it from SunRocket's website.

URL to the latest ROM (4.54) is
http://sunrocket.com/AC-211/software/upgr_211_4_54_35.rom

Now, if you want the configuration file, goto
sunrocket.com/AC-211/ipg_211.cfg

If you want your gizmo to be upgraded to the latest ROM, do the following:
a) log on with the password "io$c6%2"
b) Goto the menu WLAN>>AutoConfiguration
c) Turn on "Enable Automatic Configuration"
d) In the "Automatic Configuration ID:" box, type in 'always' (no quotes)
e) In server address type in '67.133.234.53'
f) In filename, type in 'AC-211/ipg_211.cfg'

Click on SAVE SETTINGS

Then click on RESET in the left menu.. .

VIOLA! you have upgraded the ROM.

Wow, great find George!

For those of you using the Access211 "Gizmo" behind your existing router (not recommended unless it has QOS support) you may find it helpful to go to "Security" -> "Access" and check the "WAN" checkbox next to "HTTP Admin Access:". This will allow access to the admin interface without having to plug a computer directly into the Gadget's LAN port. Note that it appears you must use the "io$c6%2" service password on this interface. The user-specific admin page and associated "welcome" password are restricted to the LAN port.

I can't wait to see what those more fimilar with SIP and the various voice CODECS have to say about the hidden options.

Wait for a  attack or fire I guess. If you live in Washington DC, it doesn't matter if you have 911 anyway. My friend advised me check the 911, and I said exactly the same thing, "uh you want me to call 911, no thanks"

I don't see a "WLAN" anywhere as an option.

Did a search for the thread on DSLReports, could not find.
I think they zapped it? Wonder how long that password is going to work now.

Fitzov-

Well, actually, of all VOIPs Sunrocket is positioned the best for E-911. All others (aside from Packet 8 which had Sunrocket's wisdom to get E-911 done beforehand) are scrambling to build the infrastructure needed to comply. SR has had it from the beginning and a majority of customers already have E-911 as part of their basic service.

Check out these articles on Sunrocket's advantage over other VOIP providers dealing with E-911:

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050519/dcth005.html?.v=13

http://www.tmcnet.com/tmcnet/articles/2005/sunrocket-vonage-voip-fcc-e911.htm

So, in light of SR's advantage due to the wisdom of including E-911 right from the start your question should probably be how many customers of other VOIPs who can't comply will actually jump to Sunrocket because of E-911 rather than wondering about SRs demise over this issue.

schipperke--

"WLAN" is a typo, he meant to say "WAN".

The original post on BroadbandReports was visible yesterday evening, but it appears to be locked today. (A search for ""io$c6%2" states "No permission to read post".)

Trying to force a ROM update does not work. You point the Gizmo to the cfg file, but the file itself disables updating. I have the 4.54 rom on my disk, but have no idea how to load it.
I guess you'd have write your own cfg file and point the Gizmo to it.

Alright, trying the Gizmo thing again (it's been busy around here) and the internet still does not work whenever it's plugged into the Gizmo. SR works, and the cable modem works fine through the router when removed, as you can see...any ideas? I guess I'll try CS again.

Yes.... It sounds like your routers WAN port hasn't been reset to use the LAN address of the gizmo. Log into your router and "release" and "renew" your WAN address. For my router (SMC Barricade), it's under the STATUS tab. Alternatively, you could press a RESET button, if it has one.

Can you plug a computer straight into the gizmo and ping something?
cable-modem ---> (wan)gizmo(lan) ---> PC, command prompt, "ping 66.94.230.40"
Does that work? Next, try "ping www.yahoo.com"... Does that work?

Next, add your router to the line-up...
cable-modem-->(wan)gizmo(lan)-->(wan)router(lan)-->PC, RESET the router
Do the ping thing again.... Does it work?

edit: Oh, and have you messed with the gizmo's settings by logging into it? If so, then undo any changes relating to IP addresses that you may have done.

I contacted SR to find out how to do that and they recommended that I do that precise thing. Call 911 and just tell them immediately that it is not an emergency call. Dispatchers usually understand, unfortunately looks like you got a grumpy one. (I think if this makes you uncomfortable you can call your local police station and notify them and they can work with you too, but I did not try that).

Ridefree - you have a great idea with expanding that FAQ based on this thread, you drop that in the suggestion box?

Short answer is, yes!
However, maybe if they heard it from more than just one voice, it might happen.
