Just a short note to RideFree and GTFan.

The Netgear Router (WRG614) also affected my download speed. Seems both the Gizmo and it can't handle my 10Mbps signal. MicroCenter took it back this afternoon.

I received another e-mail from a NOC Engineer at SunRocket in Virginia today. He is sending me a ATA from Innomedia that has proved to work in most cases on issues like I've had. They have been testing these new gizmos in beta and field tests. I have the install guide .doc file for the new gizmo already. It is 698K. So I am anxious to give the new gizmo a try when it arrives.

tom, is there a way to get a hold of that .doc file? I would like to see what this ATA has that the gizmo does not. Apparently the gizmo will eventually be replaced with this new unit. Would like to find out about the features.

I just put it up on my web page.

It's not much info. I'll post more once I receive it.

GEORGEPA -- are you an EE or computer technician? Just curious how you know so much about this stuff.......

BTW -- youve been a great help.

Well, I like the color coding, I am sure that will help a lot of people out.

What is the deal with this PPPoE setting. What does it do and why is it active for computer hook-up but disabled for router?

And its nice to see behind the router setup instructions.

SA - thanx for clarafication.

I own a computer business. I set up computers, networks, repair of laptops, desktops, etc. I have a client list of about 60 private customers and 12 businesses. I also work on website design. Keeps me hopping about 10 to 16 hours a day. When I first got SR I started sharing my experience with my clients. Almost everyone is a VOIP candidate, whether they barely make calls or a lot. Either the phone just sits there unused with the cell getting almost all calls - why spend $40 for that? Or, phone is used a ton by the family with many minutes used, including internationally, why spend $100 a month for that? When one of my clients signs up for SR they usually ask me to install it for them, so I encounter many hardware setups at the site, differing modems and routers, different network setups. I have to be on top of all potential issues to go there and not make a fool out of myself. For instance, faxing works well with SR most of the time, but sometimes it does not work well right off the bat, so I have to go inside the gizmo settings to make the appropriate changes, and, presto. I learned most of what I know from reading on sites like this one and by communicating via email and PMs with some of the other SR tweakers.

tomtrike-

Looks like a good one. I am glad it is a 2-port adapter again. SR is said to be opening up port 2 "for business" soon, meaning that instead of using just port 1 of the gizmo (with port 2 dead) you'll be able to plug a phone (or phone system) into port 2 and use it that way as a completely separate line. Supposedly there is no extra charge for basically getting a second "true" line (using the number that comes with your signature number as a stand-alone line.) If this adapter had only one phone port I would have feared that SR abandoned that idea.

"Tom,

Sometimes you get what you pay for."

Hey, not always. I am waiting for some "other" shoes to drop but this solid, feature-rich SR thing is either way underpriced at under $14 per month or all the other ones are grossly overpriced for less features and more fees. I happen to believe in the latter, so I am confident prices will go down even further. IMO this is the way VOIP should be - the opposite of big-telco politics as far as adding fees and taxes, charging for every change, every feature-add. I've been saving more than $80 per month (used to pay an average of $100 per month to Verizon) and am getting much more than I did with those jokesters.

I hear ya george. You know, regardless of the price I think my favorite thing is looking at a statement from SR and not seeing 10 lines of taxes, federal BS charges, X fee, Y deposit, etc. It's refreshing to see one price, simply laid out, and always the same.

Innomedia Gizmo up and running. After a initial problem with the gizmo not syncing, I called and found that they had my account set up with the wrong MAC number. Once that was corrected it synced and performed great. I now have my old download speed back! Take a look at the Gizmo with all the lights lit and my speed test results.

Cool. I have FIOS and was considering upgrading my speed from 5,000/2,000 to 15,000/2,000 (an extra $15 per month.) If the gizmo has bandwidth problems once the 10MB d/l threshold is reached I may end up with the same unit (which was why I was interested in reading up on it.) Glad it works for you. So, in addition to the known fixes which are "find a router with QoS" and setting up Dynamic Rate Limiting I suppose someone could request this particular router instead of the gizmo, claiming that they have issues due to having an internet connection with speeds higher than 10MB download.

One can only assume that the "wrong MAC# was the MAC address for the old Gizmo.

Anyone notice that the expansion Uniden phones are off the rewards site? They're $28.99 on Amazon and I'm assuming (although I haven't checked) that the giveanything.com g/c can be used on Amazon but that's still a couple bucks out of pocket....anyone know anyplace they're cheaper (ie <=$25) the g/c will work for? And why did they take them off the rewards?

I had actually received two new Gizmos. I elected to use Mac # ****89, But they had set up for the Mac # ****88 that had been sent out first. It seems that the guy who called me on the 9th had sent one. And the next day I received an e-mail from the SR NOC engineer in Vienna, VA who said he was sending one. I thought he was talking about the same one. So I was surprised when UPS arrived with two new Gizmos. My luck to pick the one with the wrong MAC number. Once the help desk in the Phillipines and I figured out that the wrong MAC number was stopping the auto configuration, I suggested unpacking the other one. But she said she would change my file to correct the problem. So rebooting the modem and the Gizmo completed the configuration and the VOIP LED came on.

I was later disconnected on a call to Maine from here in Ohio, but rebooting brought the VOIP light back on. Interestingly the break in the call also killed the internet connection. Three more phone calls were uneventful.

Sound quality has been good, but I notice slight echo on my end. I am using a headset phone with a boom mike.

My friend in Maine was on his Mac G-4, and when I called he said a window popped up on his monitor with my name and number on it. Neat!

GEORGEPA:

My wife works at an office with 4 phone lines. They have high speed on site (probably DSL).

Can we somehow make SR work with these 4 phone lines and still have access to high speed?

Geo.,
You really missed what I was in reference to on this one.
"You get what you pay for", has nothing to do with S/R and everything to do with the router that Tom finally bought.

What GTFan said was, "My answer with the Netgear would've been as you suspected, return it and try another one. Routers are like gizmos, none of them work the same for everyone's network configuration. "

You may need a few less of those, "...16 hours days"

Amazon is not included in the giveanything.com store listing. The only place I found from giveanything that has the Uniden DCX640 expandable is here:

$39.93 Give Anything Partner

But since that is more expensive, I think Amazon is the way to go at $28.99. Did you already get a giveanything.com GC because Amazon is also a rewards option?

I really did not mean to imply that your comment "you get what you pay for" was meant for SR. I just used the opportunity of the quote to point out the fact that that tried and true, usally correct statement does not always work for all things, SR being a good example (at this point in time.) Keeping my fingers crossed that they won't be bought out by a large telco and then extra fees and cutdowns on features (a la carte pricing) become the rule.

Extra handsets:

Staples has had promos for TWO handsets for $24.95 (buy one get one free) almost every month for the last 3 months. They may have one again this month.

Yes, you should be able to do that. Each SR line eats up 90k, so the bandwidth coming into the office must be at the very least, say, 512K. The 4 lines, used simultaneously, would take 360k. Find out what that office is getting as for internet bandwidth, both incoming and outgoing, to assess whether they should upgrade.

Assuming they have a switchbox for the 4 lines you can just go in and replace the POTS line that goes to each incoming port inside the switchbox with the SR line. They would have to purchase 4 separate services with SR (and set up 4 gizmos) to make this happen. They would gain 4 extra incoming numbers as well. Once SR activates port 2 on the gizmo with its own separate line that can be cut down to 2 services and 2 gizmos.
Either way, the yearly savings for the business are probably going to be staggering.

I would keep a POTS line active (the main incoming number for customers with a roaming feature enabled to go to one of the other numbers, and if all busy, go to voicemail) because as a business you don't want to lose valuable calls. Reliability of VOIP is somewhat lower, even with the VOIP provider having excellent uptime.

Yeah, that would be some crazy savings, what with long distance fees and even just the basic cost of the service. I wonder if many businesses are starting to pick up on that sort of thing yet. Anyone know of any companies using SunRocket?

Is there a web configuration interface for the gizmo or can I telnet to it? If so - is there a predefined IP address for the gizmo configuration?
