A couple of little helpers I use that some here may find helpful. Sunrocket gives away 2 free 411 calls, but if you or someone in your family are/is a 411 junkie it can get pricey. You probably want to disable 411 to avoid those $0.75 bombs on your bill, but your wife may come at you with a frying pan. Well, you can use a free 411 service (I have it programmed in my Uniden phone's phone book) to get around any fee. It is 1-800-373-3411. Saves some money and that way you don't have to restrict anyone's 411 "behavior." I also use this number from my cell, because 411 calls are very expensive with all cell carriers.

Not really Sunrocket related, but when I am driving and trying to find a street address I call 1-800-555-TELL for free from my cell and at the prompt I say "Driving Directions." I say the starting address (or read an address off where I just stopped - lost and confused,) then the destination address. Great guide. It is usually very accurate. That # has some more things to explore (news, stocks, movie tickets, etc.)

hmm, 800 numbers seem to be working fine for everyone. Have you tried just 800-xxx-xxxx without the 1 in the front?

I still have a problem I've had for a year:

When people call and get my answering machine they are taken aback by the loud echoes they get. Often they hang up and try again. SR suggested that I not daisy chain my phone and answering machine, so I put each on a seperate line. No change.

Before I outlay the money to invest in a new answering machine (I never had any problems with this one with POTS), I was wondering if anyone else had had this problem and if and how they resolved it?

Thanx!

Dropped call report:
After the firmware update on 1/15/06 I was doing ok. Then a few days later I received a call from SR and they said I needed another firmware update on the Innomedia Gizmo, and that I should shut down my computers durring the download to the Gizmo. Later I noted that the "run" light was blinking red. That means that the firmware download did not finish successfully. I called for help and Level I suggested a reset and another attempt at the firmware update. Well we did that several times and the outcome is that I no longer have the VOIP light and the "run" light is still blinking red. So the usual "refer to Level III" statement was made. Two more calls and three & 3 e-mails & I'm still out of order! No VOIP since 1/21/06. :-( #**#!

i'm going to ask a stupid question here. Why don't you just use the vmail that Sunrocket offers? Very rich in features and it's free and supported.

********************************************************************

Because I have a large family that all use the answering machine. When three family members come home it makes more sense for just one to push the "calls" button than for each one to make a phone call to voicemail. Trust me, it's easier in so many ways.

What kind of answering machine do you use? I'll take a stab at a hunch... Every time the voice over the phone speaks (or you do) it takes TIME for the voice to travel back and forth. Delays are introduced every time you jump from one medium to another - for example cell to copper, or copper to private phone network, or copper to VOIP... You are technically going from copper (maybe) to VOIP to Answering machine and maybe others in between - and each hop adds delays - hence the echo. The reason you didn't have delays with the normal phone service is because they have worked out those delay kinks years ago - and have specs the answering machines follow (or are supposed to). I would suggest a couple of things.. one think about getting a new at home answering machine that might do the job better (don't ask me what that is - at least you have some days to return the machine if it does not work immediately). Like telephones, each answering machine has its own performance and functionality when interacting with the incoming call. Some will probably do the job over others. I have another suggestion that might work, but I would only give it over PM.

I am planning to invest in a new router and will probably buy a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G). Hopefully these problems can be resolved. Any further advice will be appreciated. By the way DoozerM, the voip test ranges from 3.0 to 4.0.

Your quality is OK. If you are on a cable modem, then of course, there is the issue of TCP/IP collisions since everyone on Cable shares the same connection. I have a WRT54G and love it. I selected a V3.0 since it allowed me to switch out the firmware with one that had QoS - which allows me to prioritize the upload traffic so that there is enough for SR. If you would like the Router to provide good QoS, then I would suggest you look at a V1-V4 (not V5) or the WRT54GL models, and do a similar firmware swap.

I agree that you should try another machine (returnable) from one of the package stores to see if the issue changes. Before that, perhaps you can try the "gain" setting in the gizmo setup? With the latest firmware SR added a volume gain feature that can be set from (I believe) +3 to -3. I never had to use it, but maybe changing the settings here would change things as for how "strong" the voice comes into your answering machine, perhaps removing those echoes. If it is as Doozer says, a delay of some sort, then that would not help, of course. Only another answering machine would.

Finally today I called SR again to find out what is happening with my service request of 1/21/06. She said a new Gizmo was sent out to me today.

I am disappointed that I did not hear from them since the 23rd. When your phone is out of order you must know how long it will be till it's fixed. I'll be interested to see if I hear from "builditbetter@sunrocket.com". I've been with SR since 12/29/05 and this will be my third Gizmo. I hope that the third one is a "keeper".

More on my Gizmo loss of VOIP light.

I finally heard from SR Engineering. Seems someone had closed my repair ticket by mistake. A Gizmo had not been shipped as I thought. They were thinking of the first shipment earlier this month. So I will be receiving one soon.

I guess we should ask for a new number ticket with each call to prevent this mix-up from happening.

Still 5 days without service. :-(

What are the configuration settings to make this work with my PAP2? It'll be a week before I get the gizmo and need to setup my phone service before then since I just got rid of packet8. Can someone read the config from their adapter and post the IP addresses and port information that Sunrocket uses? Thanks,

I just wanted to say, that after using SunRocket for a few months, I am very happy I chose this service. I have yet to use E911 (god forbid) and I haven't needed much customer service, so I cannot review those things. I do enjoy using their web services such as voicemail logs, call logs, etc, and I wish I could hug the guy that decided it would be smart to send free Uniden phones because I have gotten so much use out of them. I get echo's/metallic voices sometimes but not often enough to complain... especially for $13.97/month. I do recommend this service.

Anyone else have a problem with the Forwarding function? It worked for me long before I received a working Gizmo, so it obviously forwards at their source number rather than within my wiring or phone. Lately, it forwards the calls but as soon as I pick up the phone where the call has been forwarded to, the caller gets disconnected (hears dead silence).
When it first went bad, the "Do not disturb" voicemail function did the same thing, but after deleting the voice mail boxes and recreating them Do Not Disturb/voice mail works, but Forwarding still cuts people off before making a voice connection. Am I the only one with this issue?

If you are out of service, call in and have them credit that time back to your accout & a week or 2 on top of that for the headache (see how it goes, maybe get a whole month free- just sound real upset!).

I didn't want to activate my gizmo until my number was ported, I didn't want to tell people that for a week use "this" number. I called in and told them I have not used their service nor gizmo for over 3 weeks after I got it. They credited me those 3 weeks without a problem!

Just keep in mind mistakes happen, as long as they're working to fix it. As long as they reimburse you for any inconveniences, it's fair!

Had some of my own questions.

Is there any way to use a personal answering machine? Sunrocket has the digital answering machine, but I would rather come home, see there is a massage and press play then dial 00 + # + pin = hear messages. Besides how do you know if you have a message? Does something blink, or you have to call in to see if there is 1?

It seems nice if you want to access your messages remotely, but seems like a long process retreiving when you're actually at home. Not to mention you won't know you have a message until you call in and check!

leonc-

Forwarding works fine. Yours seems to be a rare issue, judging by the non-reports.

Someone else in a different forum had a similar issue. He did 2 things: He opened an escalation ticket with SR about the issue. He also tried a combination of shutting down forwarding (go to No Forwarding,) then resetting the gizmo (unplugging the gizmo from the wall, plugging it back in after about a 2 minute wait.) Activating forwarding again then worked like a charm. He is not sure if it was the ticket he opened with SR and them fixing it at their end or if it was as simple as just taking forwarding off, then rebooting the gizmo. The latter method is probably worth a try before you open a ticket about this.

NYCFella-

I don't think leonc is out of service. He has an issue with forwarding, not generally receiving or making calls, the way it reads.

To your own question:

You can use a regular answering machine. The only thing to keep in mind is that that machine would kick in for calls for either number. That means that you would lose a bit of functionality, because the second incoming number has its own voicemail box as well, a separation that would get lost with just one machine. Of course, if you did not use your second number for a different setup (business <-> personal or Mom <-> Dad,) one machine could be fine.

The VM way is my preferred way. Why? Because it makes retrieval a bit easier and a lot more featured, all things considered. Sure, a machine offers one press of a button to get to your messages. With SR's voicemail you pick up the phone and dial 00, which I don't find that much of an extra hassle. You don't HAVE to enter the pin, you can set SR up to not ask for the pin, so it is really 00 plus 0. The Uniden phones most of us got with their accounts flash a red light on top of each phone when a voicemail is waiting to be retrieved, so in that sense there is no difference between the machine blinking and SRs VM system.

What I like about SR's VM is the ability to retrieve from multiple locations, be notified, screen messages, and forward to email. I can check my voicemail from any phone by calling my phone number, then hitting * to get into my voicemail system. Alternatively I can set it up so that all voicemail's are sent to my email address as .wav files, allowing me to listen to my VMs on the computer. Probably good at work where many have Outlook open to get emails as they come in. You can also go into the SR web portal to listen to all voicemails. In addition you may have SR voicemail notify you. Your choice, to cell, other phone, email, IM, SMS, ICQ. Sunrocket notifies you as soon as a voicemail comes in (you could be in a different state.) You may choose one or a combination with up to all of those notification options. If the notification is via phone you will receive a call from your home with a recorded message informing you that VM has been left for you, complete with the number of the person who just left the message and how many seconds long the message is. An additional very nifty feature is that while you are being notified (I use my cell for notification) or shortly after the notification ended you may hit the # key and the system transfers you directly into your voicemail area so you can listen instantly to the message, only moments after it has been left. No need to call back.

You can also use two nifty programs, one called the VOICE MESSAGE SCREENER, the other program is called USCREEN, which allow you to listen to messages as they are being left, not unlike the ability to do the same thing with a standard answering machine. However, what is more advanced is that you can install this program on any computer, so you could listen to voicemails as they are being left on any computer either one of the programs is installed on. That could be in different rooms of a large house or even remote locations (at work, on vacation, at friend's house.) You can use both programs simultaneously, so you can monitor BOTH of your SR phone numbers at the same time from any computer. In addition to just monitoring the calls you have other options here: You may select to "take the call" because the message you are hearing is important (i.e. emergency, business opportunity, etc.) by routing the call to any phone of your designation. That could be your cell phone, a friend's phone or your own home phone yet again, this time with you actually picking up. You can also select to leave a personalized message to the caller into his message progress (with USCREEN.) That could be one of 3 canned responses: "I'm not here right now, please leave a message."
"I'm on the other line, leave a message and I'll call you right back."
"I can't come to the phone, leave a message and I'll get back to you."
Or, you can enter your own message or select from one you have previously entered and it will be read to the caller via Text-to-Speech. Enter the text or select a message from the pull-down box in the Text-to-Speech Response section, and click Respond with TTS. The message is played to the caller and he or she can then choose to leave a message. If it is an "undesireable person" you could actually type "Leave me the heck alone" or worse.

VOICE MESSAGE SCREENER is provided by Sunrocket. You have to activate it by calling into customer service. Activate it for BOTH phone numbers. Once you do the VOICE MESSAGE SCREENER program shows up in the Download section in SRs web portal. USCREEN can be downloaded (and read up on) here:

USCREEN VOICE MESSAGE SCREENER - use with Sunrocket

Between the advanced notification features, multiple retrieval features, voice message screeners and simply having a message split between the 2 numbers (my wife has her own phone number with her own voicemail box) this beats the machine approach, IMO.

I have a similar issue when calls are being transferred to my SR Voicemail (which is a kind of forwarding). Randomly the calls get picked up by my Gizmo (which means dead silence for a few seconds, and then diconnect) vs. getting forwarded on. When I look at my SR logs, they are registered as incoming calls vs. missed. I have pinged SR support about it and they want me to delete and reset my voicemail. I am not sure if that would solve it or not, since my voicemail works 98% of the time.

I always thought the old answering machine was a PITA.
Every time you came in the house and there was a message, it screamed for attention.
You couldn't even put the groceries away or take a leak...
