I know some people have mentioned better results after moving the gizmo behind their firewall but just got off the phone w Sunrocket to get my firmware upgrade and they strongly mentioned leaving it in front of your router. It's a QoS thing. If it's in the middle it can prioritize the voice traffic as needed over regular traffic. Yes, your d/l's may suffer slightly when on the phone but personally I can live with that as long as it's not affecting traffic when I'm not on the phone.

YMMV, do it however you want.

You'll never notice the hit (as long as you have the new Vorizon Fiber - 15MB D/L).

But it's clear. First call had echo, but that went away on the second one.

I'm so damn excited Now if i can just tap into the current phone lines.. i'll be good to go. and gotta check 911.

oh, and I ordered last thursday/friday I think? It got here fast. And unfortunately verizon fiber isn't available... but how does it connect... not over standard copper... cause then i couldn't drop local phone service could i...

Did you stick the gizmo before or behind your router?

We're using 802.11b WiFi and our speeds aren't that great to begin with.

I hope we can place the gizmo before the router.

rossman, from all I've been reading, putting it behind the router is what most are doing without issue. Putting it before the router gives your phones voice-quality very high precedence at the expense of bandwidth up/down. If you like to tinker, there's some QoS settings that you can play with that wll make the impact on up/down-loads not so severe, yet maintain high voice-quality. Putting the gizmo ahead of the router reportedly affects up/down-load speeds dramatically, whether you're talking on the phone or not.

You could always try one way and switch if you don't like the effects.

btw... make sure you're wep enabled, or else someone could mess with your gizmo.
I could see a neighbors Vonage "gizmo" on an unprotected lan. My neighbor chose to put his "gizmo" in front of the router, fwiw. (I'm guessing s/he just followed the manual)

edit: I could disable their phone in less than 1 minute. Scary.

I could put mine behind the router, since i'm using the linksys 54WRTG(or whatever it is... has the hacked firmware). I can prioritize ports. But my router seems to die on heavy traffic... soooo.. in front of the router it goes untils a final of version 6 of the firmware is out.

blast, i thought the signature line was actually another line.. ha... damn

I have been using SunRocket for the past 2 weeks. My incoming calls were activated just yesterday. Everything seems to be fine except I have this sporadic problem when I use my touch tone phone keypad to respond to messages (like when you have to key in account numbers or something). The computer on the other end does not always recognize all the key presses. I have not encountered this with my regular phone service. My gizmo is connected directly to my cable modem and is ahead of the router. I am going to ask customer service about this.

I'm going to guess that you have interference in the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
Try using your old phone on the Gizmo & see if that solves it. If so, you'll be flea-baying the Unidens & opting for something in the 5.8 GHz arena.

Thanks for the tip. That is quite likely to be the issue. I had earlier placed the Unidens next to my DLink 624 router. I noticed that my wireless connection kept dropping quite often and my download / upload speeds (as tested on dslreports speedtest) was really slow. I then moved the 2 as far apart as I could (unfortunately still in the same room) and things improved dramatically. I have a VTech 2.4 GHz cordless phone set that I have been using for a couple of years now and I never had any network issues (that phone is stiull connected to my POTS line). I will try getting an extra long phone cord and try moving the Unidens to a different room. Will keep you informed.

Should I bother opening my Uniden 2.4's?

Not sure if I should upgrade to 5.8 or not.

I have opened and used the uniden units I recieved and I don't have any complaints. Yeah it may not be sony or panasonic, but these phones are packed with features. Plus they are small and light weight compared to my older sony 900 megahertz digital phone. Plus they were free, so you surely can't go wrong.

skadoo323, do you have a WiFi network?

If yes is it b or g? Do the cordless phones interfere?

my 2.4ghz phones interfere w/ my wifi network (g network, only b devices tho). sony, panasonic... haven't tried the uniden, but we only have a laptop that uses wifi... and really, it can use the wired network, so leaving it at that. Don't have the urge to pay for an upgrade to 5.8ghz.

Did your calls work exactly on the 10th business day? That day is tomorrow for me, and I'm hoping incoming will work finally.

Anyone else forced to use 10 digit dialing? Just got hooked up a few hours ago and can't make a call by dialing local 7 digit #. Yes, the # I signed up for is in my local area code. FWIW, I still can't receive incoming calls on my assigned #. Does it just need a little longer to get settled down?

Yes, everyone is required to us 10 digit dialing. As far as I know, 7 digit is not available for anyone.

Crap, I really wish that was explained up front. Is that the way it is w all VOIP? Probably wouldn't have signed up if I knew that but now that I have it I'll try to work w it. Pushing those 3 extra buttons doesn't really take that much longer but somewhere along the line there's a principle involved that we shouldn't have to use 10 digits to call around the corner.

I am not sure as to whether it was 10 business days exactly, but that was the rough timeframe. Funny thing was that I was expecting an email informing me that my incoming service was active, but never received one. I just kept trying my number and it worked one day.

Day 7:

Gizmo arrived. Uniden phones arrived. Started charging Uniden phones (20 hours). Grabbed a regular phone to test gizmo.

Set up gizmo according to instructions (gizmo is between the router and cable modem). Instructions worked perfectly and gizmo was up and running.

Out going calls immediately worked. INCOMING CALLS IMMEDIATELY WORKED TO THE SIGNATURE NUMBER, but not to the household number. The second part doesn't bother me since the household number is temporary and my home phone line will become the household number soon.

Call quality: first couple of calls were a bit scratchy, but now they seem fine. Don't know what "fixed the issue". There is a tiny bit of static in calls to cell phones, but it is minor.

Incoming calls: phone rings fine, and call quality seems fine.

Issues:
1) voicemail .wav file quality is iffy. Very scratchy.
2) all calls log (on the web) to the household number that doesn't even work yet. The calls do NOT separate between the household/signature/home phone line (which is already in their system).

Called customer service on the two issues - "they are aware and working on both and hope to resolve them by end of month."

Yet to come:
When phone line service ends and is transferred to sunrocket - i'll report back again about using home wiring (and see if the two lines get separated in voicemail)

As far as I can tell, my download/upload speeds are barely affected. which is a bad thing I can hear the other party rather clearly, but they get a somewhat broken up version of me. Normal browsing is fine, my limited testing was consistant bandwidth usage.

This is odd since I have the gizmo IN FRONT of the router. I do want it to take priority though.

As for international, so far, only canada tried, but it was clear, altho the other end sounded a tad "distant"

Echos of myself I still softly hear... but only on local land lines it seems. but I've only dialed a friend and my own house (w/ regards to hard lines), and we live about 3 minutes apart. all the cell phones I've tried have been flawless.

If I can't fix the prioritization... it's going to have to go back... but otherwise, very happy with it.

oh, i'll add I'm on day 6 I think, including weekends. No incoming works yet.
