NEW INNOMEDIA GIZMO WORKS !!!

This morning UPS delivered my latest Innomedia Gizmo which has the latest firmware pre-installed. It now comes with a small instruction book. I had it up and running in just a few minutes and it performed flawlessly. I made test calls from my landline and also using the SR phone. I was able to place calls and receive calls on VOIP.

So I am back in business. Too bad it took a 6 days. But as I reported here, that was due to a trouble ticket mix-up.

I wondered about the time it took. If it is a gizmo replacement that is usually an overnighter with SR. Glad this one works. Let us know about that Innomedia box as far as performance is concerned.

Can somebody recommend a good router that I can purchase to use with SunRocket? I have an old Netgear but I now believe that is causing a lot of problems with my phone. I have the gizmo installed behind the router. Thank you for your recommendation.

tomtrike: Looks the same, but this time it works. Same fast download speed.
georgpa:I wondered about the time it took. If it is a gizmo replacement that is usually an overnighter with SR.
tomtrike:That's what I told level I. It wasn't till I e-mailed SR Engineering direct that I got action.
My download speed is unaffected by the Innomedia Gizmo.

Before buying a new one, I'd try putting the gizmo in front of the router, to see if it's really the router that's causing the problems.

If you do need / want a new router, the Linksys WRT54G is a great choice. It has an open sourced firmware, so you can flash it to include all kinds of new features...mesh mode, QoS prioritization for VOIP, increase signal strength dramatically, etc. Older versions work better with alternative firmware releases (I think version 5 has the most problems...I'm using a version 2.2).

Hope that helps,

Dave.

dchakrab, thank you for your suggestion. When I place the gizmo in front of the router, it dops the internet connection in half. But, the other way around my internet speed is about 4.8Mbps. I did some research and alot of people seem to like the Linksys WRT54G. What firmware are you currently using of sveasoft ?

Yeah, but the question is: Aside from the download speed drop, does your voice stay stable when you have the gizmo in front of the router? Do your problems (12 second black-outs) disappear? If so, it is obviously either a router "gone bad" or incompatible somehow.

Just a quick update to my original post...It only keeps getting better!
Canceled my Qwest POTS and Working Assets LD service - and thanks to tips from RideFree  have disengaged incoming phone line power...Now my VOIP router phone1 line is plugged directly into phone tap in wall of upstairs and I have VOIP phones plugged in throughout the house including a brand new Brother 5440 MFC FAX/Copier/Printer which is also networked downstairs - I can send/receive FAX directly from my PC upstairs to a VOIP-enabled FAX machine downstairs - folks, it doesn't get much better than this

Got my Plantronics CS50 bundle all set up and am now able to wander around the house and/or 2/3 of an acre back yard taking calls and yakking on my VOIP-enabled communications center! My home office setup is now top-drawer!

Thanks to all on this thread who also have shared their experiences (good and bad) which have undoubtedly provided useful tips and insights for those having issues getting up and running.

If I can answer any specific questions for those with similar gear that I have, by all means ask away - I don't pretend to be an expert but rather a lucky man with blinders who managed to miss stepping in sh*t

I've used different firmwares...this is the one I used most recently: Linksys WRT54G firmware.

The idea is that you can prioritize VOIP traffic to take precedence over regular traffic, which can help you get voice quality up without hurting download speeds too much. Not too experienced with this, though, since Sunrocket works fine with my connection without much extra tweaking.

So, to recap: Connect the Gizmo upstream of the router. Make and receive a few calls...are your problems continuing? If so, you've probably got some issues with the router, and you can consider an upgrade. If not, then it's not the router, and you've got some more troubleshooting to do.

Before writing off the router entirely, you could try a few other things. Is it assigning an IP to the gizmo? If so, set it to assign the same IP address to the Gizmo each time, or set the Gizmo to a fixed IP address outside the DHCP range. Then put the Gizmo in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). This could improve your call quality if it's a SPI / NAT firewall port blocking problem...this could also keep the gizmo from hogging all of your bandwidth.

Using the Gizmo across any kind of wifi connection is bad karma, as I found out through several painful episodes. I'd strongly recommend against it...wifi, as I now know, is a "bursty" protocol, while voip is happy only with a steady, continuous high-quality bandwidth steam. If you've got any access point bridges in the middle, you're going to have trouble.

Dave.

I got the 'get 13 months for $199' bit from Sunrocket via email.

Is there any way to get 15 months as a RENEWAL, or is this the best Sunrocket is offering to renewing customers?

Does anyone out their have a slight crackling noise when picking the phone up to make a call? I recently got my system installed the other day and so far it is working great and the calls are clear, but when I just hit the talk button on the uniden phone prior to dialing I can hear static/crackling in the dial tone. Anyone else have this, or possibly know the cause? I have cable internet 4mbps/512mbps, I have tried it with the gizmo in front of the wrt54g router and also behind it but the results are the same. TIA

I'm going to guess that since the wireless router and the phones share the same 2.4GHz radio band, you will have a conflict as you describe or worse, your wife might get the LAN & the phone crossed with some pornstar website/900 number and you'll come home to the house being set on fire.
Well, maybe not quite that severe

This is great. Thanx for guinea pigging for us. I am looking into FiOS and other higher speed services and its nice to know that SR and you has thought ahead... Was there any behind the scenes words about if this will become "the" next gizmo or is it a special order for special folks?

I think that all you have to do is say your gizmo is slowing down your downloads. everyone at the help line seems to know about it. One guy on the Philippines help line said that Innomedia came over and trained them on the new Gizmo. so it sounds like they might be switching to this model.

Thanks, Ridefree, but my problem is when a fax calls me on the VOIP line. Not sending.

The easy way to get around this prob, as mentioned more than once in the thread, is to forward your 2nd (signature) line to a free fax service such as k7.net. Then you can get all your inbound faxes as emails and only print what you want. Been working great for the wife in almost a year's use, no missed faxes.

GTFan-

The problem could perhaps be that the signature number is in use by another family member (my wife uses the signature number as "her" number she gives out to everyone, checks her voicemails on, maintains on the web portal, screens.) I agree that online faxing via forwarding is probably the "flawless" way to go. If I used faxing more I would spring for an add'l $3 a month and forwarded that line to the free Stanaphone fax. Still, there is something to be said for fax machines, instantly being able to read your faxes and not having to log onto your computer. I have a fax machine that works very well with SR. It also functions as a copier and b&w laser printer, so it gets a lot of use around here. It is the HP Laserjet 3150 All-In-One. SR works with it 100% of the time, so if someone needs a fax to work flawlessly with SR, that's the equipment I would recommend. It is older, so if anyone is really interested, it can be had on ebay for starting around $20 (plus shipping.)

IMseeker-

I never tried using a faxmodem for incoming, but I read that others got theirs to work, so I would think yours should work, too. If it used to work there are probably settings in the latest firmware that make it less workable for you now. First thing you may want to try would be to bring the baud rate of your computer modem way down. Try as low as it can get, then try receiving a fax. Then work your way up until you get a baud rate that works without sacrificing too much fax speed. You could also try to change some settings in your gizmo setup. Try the baud rate change first and let us know if that worked. If it didn't, we can go from there.
