I have the Cu+. 7000 RPM is loud but my temps are really stable. 39-40 idle. 40-41 under load. Very little variance between idle and load. I see a lot of people posting CPU temps and most have about 5 degrees difference between idle and load. That tells me the CPU goes thru a heat/cool cycle all the time.

Before this Volcano 6Cu+, I had the stock HSF. My temps were in the upper 50s then.

Isn't there some resistor trick that can be done to fans? I seem to remember something like that where you put one on the hot wire.

I got the louder one because I figured I wanted more bang for my buck (both speeds same price at newegg) and I wanted there to be enough improvement over the stocker, to justify even buying one in the first place. With a 45db 120mm in the case, I may not notice this "screamer" as bad as is being described, but maybe a resistor added could cut the power (and thus sound) down to somewhere between the 2 speeds available.

I know there is a software freebie that does that called speedfan.

Anybody use that ?
Or know if a resistor would work ?

This clip thing is what bothers me. Does board brand make a difference here ?
I got the Gigabyte 7DX from the AMD giveaway.

How about swapping clip from stock fan ?

ghouldini:

A simple trick when installing the heatsink is to push the clip down with a small or medium screwdriver. It has a tab to permit this. Wrap the tip of the screwdriver with tape first to help minimize damage if you slip. if possible, put a piece of paper or cardboard on the motherboard immediately below the clip.

I've installed four with no problem, and I'm a physical klutz. It's not that hard.

But as my post above mentioned, in no way buy this or anything from abilty/webuildpcs.com.

I had no idea this was the same outfit as theoverclockerstorez.com, which also has a horrible reputation. Did you file a negative review with them on resellerratings.com?

I'm not 100% sure on the theoverclockerstorez.com being the same company, but if you look at the bottom of the screen on their website it says "Copyright © CenCom Inc." And no, I did not leave negative feed back. I was hoping eventually someone from the company would try to make things right. Maybe I should have just disputed the order with the credit card company?

Definately dispute it with your credit card company. They have a lot more leverage than you do. Unfortunately, I waited too long so now I'm screwed out of $100+ by these jokers.

Also post the negative comments-bad vendors deserve to be publically identified.

That's some nice mirror you got there. Is that a lap job followed by a buff job or just buffing?

I had heard these don't need to be lapped.

Got mine from Newegg. I always check resellerratings out first if I am looking at a new vendor I haven't used before. I have never had any trouble swapping/installing sinks before among 4 computers I got/built but those were retail or generic sinks that don't have the super strong clips on them. I wouldn't care too much about a parts box I built but don't want to screw anything on that XP board. Tooe expensive to have an "accident" on.

I downloaded that speedfan program. I will try it out if it's too loud for me and I am running cool enough to take a temp hit I am sure would acompany any fan slowdown.
I would prefer a hardware solution like the resistor thing I mentioned, but don't know electronics enough to know exactly what I need to do.

Thanks for the link.

While it's not what I had in mind (I don't care about it being adjustable) that will help me out. I wanted to use a set resistor to cut off just enough power to slow the fan slightly (not quite to the slower fan model) but enough to cut some noise and keep good cooling. Not that the slower 6u doesn't cool enough. I will study that info, and figure what I need.
