Volcano II HSF - too old or not?

I'm looking at getting a cheap replacement HSF for cooling an Athlon 800 that is currently pushing 60C. (The box that it's in has bad airflow because of space/noise constraints.) Anyway, I was wondering if a Volcano II (~$9 shipped) would be a good choice for this quiet, non-overclocked system or if there are newer HSFs that would be a better choice for around the same temp/noise/price levels. Thanks.

A Volcano II should work fine for your application but you might want to consider something like a Volcano 5 instead, which doesn't cost much more (only $1.50 difference at NewEgg, but you seem to be getting your price from somewhere else) and would be a little more flexible if you decide to upgrade.

I would almost get a little more beef on my cooler if you have very little airflow and are pushing 60C. I would get the Volcano 6cu and go with the copper base to give you a little better cooling. The fan is still as quiet as the Volcano 5. Of course you would spend a little bit more like $4-6 more for copper. Again it would be with you in the future if you upgraded. Found on this here.

I wouldn't recomend getting a volcano 5 since the fan is extremely loud (I have one and its extremely noisy). I heard the volcano 7+ is extremely quiet on the medium setting and also the SVC GC-68 with a L1A if not OCing (but no RPM monitoring).

I agree that the Volcano 5 is a little loud (though the Volcano II should be about the same since it has the same fan). I just realized this last night when I was testing my new QuietPC power supply (for use in a new system I'm building) and discovered that the major source of noise in my Athlon 950 box was the V5. I think I'm going to order one of those SVC GC68 coolers and try it out.

Thanks guys, I picked up an SVC GC-68 (as well as a Dr. Thermal TI-V77L to play around with for another comp). I'll let you know my little comparison experiment turns out.

Eek, whatever you do, do it quick. That processor is waaay too hot. My Athlon 900 never gets above 25C (MBM5). This is with a Vantec CCK6035D w/ Sunon 60mm.

Are you sure your monitoring isn't messed up somehow? That seems ridiculously low. My Athlon 950 idles at 38C (case is at 30C).
