For Non OC Athlon 1.4GHz:

Volcano II or Mini Copper Orb?
Should I use the pad or the Arctic Silver II?

Orbs are not good cooling solutions for CPUs. The Blue Orb aka BLORB or baby orb is OK for smaller chipsets/graphics cards but stay away from the Gold/Silver/Platinum/Seafoam green orbs for CPUs.

The Volcano II is a decent HSF. So is the FOP32 or any of the other highly recommended ones. Thermal pads are junk.

1. Scrape off as much thermal pad as you can w/your fingernail. NOT a screwdriver! You don't want to scratch or nick the bottom of the HS.

2. Any remaining pink goo comes off easily w/some WD40/fingernail polish remover applied on a paper towel.

3. After all the pink goo is off, was HSF under hot soapy water (NOT dishwasher ) and dry thoroughly.

4. Before installation, wipe bottom of HS with papertowel wet w/rubbing alcohol

5. Apply a thin (almost, but not quite see-thru) layer of AS/ASII to the CPU core (the little metal square part w/the writing on it)

6. Install HSF. You might want to read AMDs Heatsink Installation Guide first, I've you've never done this before.

Good luck.

MikeD gives some good advice.

Neither of the HS/F combos you are looking at are going to do very well with a 1.4 gig chip. That chip runs super hot. If you are looking for a budget solution I would look at something like a FOP32. If it doesn't cool adequately you can always easily upgrade the fan later.

Or, spend a little more and get something like the all copper gladiator. Someone posted a link in another thread, you can get it with the Delta fan, shipped for only $25... that's pretty cheap for a top notch HS/F... loud though.

Also, as Mike said get rid of the horrible TIM (Thermal pad) and put some decent thermal compound on there. Just make sure whatever you do you do it slowly. Rushing a HS/F install is a recipe for disaster.

You should never use the thermal pad. Most of them are garbage except for the one that comes with the thermogenie.

since no one addressed the question I'll take a stab at it. The Mini Copper Orb has a lower thermal resitance, that is to say it transfers more heat. It's TR is 0.54C/W where as the Volcano II is 0.64C/W, I would go with the Mini Copper, however only as a replacement to the stock HSF and not as a cooling solution for serious overclocking.

Best Of Luck

most manufacturers claims of cooling capacity haven't been proven out in benchmark testing so I don't know if I'd go strictly on that.

If you decide on the VolcanoII,be prepared to lap it. Their finish has much to be desired.
