When booting into win98 I get the following error message:
"The volume that was removed had open files on it. Next time please check first to see if the volume can really be removed."
Followed by this error message:
"The file system mounted on the volume had data that needed to be flushed. Some data on the volume was lost. Next time please check first to see if the volume can really be removed."
After this it gives me fatal exception errors as it tried to close all of the remaining programs that are open. I get these error messages as windows is loading programs into the taskbar. Below are some system specs:
Abit BF6 MB
Celeron 400mhz CPU w/generic slotket
Western Digital 20 gig ata/66 (Has the win98 files on it).
Compaq 8.4 gig
Matrox G400 AGP video card
Promise ata/66 controller card
I've had this happen to this machine before. I ended up having to format and re-install everything. It worked for a few months and then got these error messages again. It has the latest bios for the MB, and all the drivers were pretty much up to date. The only guess I can make as to why this is happening is because of the Compaq drive. It may be looking for files on that drive, but I installed Win98 to the WD drive so this doesn't seem feasible. I tried removing the cables from the Compaq drive and booting that way, but I got the same errors. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I don't want to have to format and have this happen again in another few months.
BTW, it's not my system, but these errors seemed to start happening after the owner tried to install a D-link network card that he said didn't install fully. I think he tried to re-boot the system after the install program was hung up or something like that.
