The above was from Vonage's site. Is this true? All calls require 11 digits? We have 10 digit dialing here, but is that saying yes, even local calls require 11 digits. (I realize that is what it says, but beat me over the head with it if it's true)

And that would matter because? Yes you have to dial 1 + area code for all calls... But in a lot of places you already had to dial 10 digits... For the discount I get, I can "afford" to dial 1

Yes I'm aware of 10 digit dialing and that isn't a problem, but all my speed dials on my phone are set up for 10 digits. Also, if the incoming call/number matches the number in my speed dial, it displays MY name for the number (like you cell phone) instead of the number the telco provides. Soooo, does Vonage pass the 11 digital number for incoming calls? Otherwise for me it wouldn't work as none of the numbers would match my speed dial. Also 10 digit dialing lets me know I am using a free local call vs dialing one which means I'm on my dime (or nickel as it were). How much extra cheese fees get added on (taxes, whatnot)? Is it comparable to what the telco adds? I'd really like to drop Verizon, but I can't seem to make the "deal" work...

Hey, I just wanted to clear something up for you guys regarding 911 calls and cell phones. In the US all cell phone service providers are required to accept 911 calls regardless of service activation. So you could buy a cell phone off ebay like a nokia 5190 which sells for about 10-15 bucks with a wall plug adaptor and you will always have access to 911. Or if you have a inactivated cell phones lying around you can use that for your 911 calls and become free to switch to vonage. I also know this works because I remember reading that the fcc required all cell phones to be able to dial 911, I actually keep a inactivated att cell phone in my car for emergencies and my friend keeps a inactivated cingular phone and both work to dial 911 (and yes we have actually have needed to call 911 for road emergencies.) I'd recommend finding out which service provider has the best reception in your home (borrow a friends phone and test the reception) and buy a cheap cell phone which supports that carrier from ebay. Make sure you have good reception because it would suck to have no service in a emergency.

Oh yea I forgot one thing. A sim card is not required to dial 911

Ok, stop thinking regular phone! If you get the $25 plan, anything in the same area code (plus a couple of others check

On the $25 deal tho, there are no split area codes, so you will know by the area code. As for the info sent from caller id, YES it sends back 11 digits. You would have to reset the speed dials to include that extra digit.

You don't have to have a paid land line to get 911 service.

Is this really true? I have emailed the phone company about this before. They suggested that stopping phone service would kill the line... including 911.

911 access for my family has been the only thing that has prevented me from dropping my land line.

Signed up a week ago...

$67.61 for equipment, setup, first months service, taxes, etc.

Installed yesterday.

Sound quality is surprisingly good, probably as good as my Verizon land line does when it isn't suffering terrible fits of noise. Vonage service with bells and whistles costs about what a basic Verizon line costs here with no extras. I really like being able to adjust the settings on my account from the web site. I can see how 911 is an issue for many, but vonage does say they are going to be rolling out some limited 911 service. I'm happy to rely on my cell for 911 service. I think if emergency calls are really an issue for your family, you'd want some kind or redundant service like a cell phone, alarm company with panic buttons, etc. Could you really rely on just a land line?

Anyone know what is considered the 'region' for 503 in Oregon? Oregon seems to be missing from their list of what would be included in your regional calling plan.

Just got my Vonage service up and running last night (via my Cox Cable connection). I'm very impressed with the service. Quality is just as good as my old land line (to my ears anyway), and there is no perceivable lag. I'll be saving at least $15 a month compared to what I was paying Verizon, so this is a good deal for me.

(By the way, I had to purchase a router, and went with the Linksys BEFSX41 EtherFast®Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4-Port Switch/VPN EndPoint. Although it's not on the Vonage list of tested routers yet, it works fine. Got it at Buy.com for $55 after rebate.)

Got mine connected a few days ago... Really sweet!

I went to the incoming phone line from Verizon in my home and made a wire that went to the ATA-186 to the main house connection. All phones in the house now use the Vonage service! I love it. I am waiting for my home Verizon phone to be changed over to Vonage, they give you a temporary number in the interim...

...My Local/LD bill was a combined $54 including all taxes. Now I will be paying about $27 for all local calls plus 500 minutes long distance! Quality has been great so far, Called the parents in Florida and a dozen or so other calls without fail... had a few incoming calls too...can't wait to put this phone on full time!

I went to the incoming phone line from Verizon in my home and made a wire that went to the ATA-186 to the main house connection. All phones in the house now use the Vonage service! I love it. I am waiting for my home Verizon phone to be changed over to Vonage, they give you a temporary number in the interim...

...My Local/LD bill was a combined $54 including all taxes. Now I will be paying about $27 for all local calls plus 500 minutes long distance! Quality has been great so far, Called the parents in Florida and a dozen or so other calls without fail... had a few incoming calls too...can't wait to put this phone on full time!

Just an update, that my POTS (Verizon) line was switched over in 19 days total. I am very happy with the service thus far... anyone on the fence, consider how much you will save on a monthly basis and apply this toward what you pay Vonage for start-up costs...

Another note...Vonage does have FREE Voice Mail... and the ATA device does a stutter dial tone when you have messages.. I have a Siemens 4200 2.4Ghz phone and the Voice Mail light lights up when I have messages!!
