I believe it will operate in the older AGP x4 slots that allow AGP x2 compatibility, however it will not work on the new ones (specifically on Intel chipsets) that require 1.5V cards.
3Dfx was trying to tell us Voodoo5 owners that it was a 4x AGP part.
In fact it's basically always in PCI mode regardless of what speed AGP slot you put it in. Putting the card into an AGP slot just makes it act as a fast PCI interface.
