I want benchmarks dammit!

Edit: I'm not surprised. They've been pretty tight-lipped about the V5 6k for the past couple of months. This is a logical progression.

I want temperature and power consumption readings damnit! j/k

My guess is they're tight-lipped because they know they won't be able to sell many of these things once they're ready to ship. Nothing is worse than overhyping a product, releasing it, and not being able to fill demand. Especially when the survival of your company may hang in balance.

Most likely. Not too many people have that kinda scratch to spend on a video card.

<< Especially when the survival of your company may hang in balance. >>

I doubt their future will be determined by a niche product that may or may not make it to the mainstream market.

they upped the core/memory speeds to 183 mhz, will they release like a second revision of the 5500 at 183 mhz? That'd be kind of cool.

Most likely. The same way they made the V3 series - by binning the fastest chips and alotting them to be used on the V5 6K. Its nothing surprising. nVidia is doing the same thing for the GTS Ultras.

The Voodoo 5 6000 is not going to save 3dfx. This is a card for the hardware enthusiast with a lot of cash, not the general consumers.

So is GeForce2 GTS? So is Radeon? So is the V5 5500? Dude, none of these crazy prices are for us general consumers.

I think not! The V5 6000 IS FOR THE HARDWARE FANATIC.

Cheapest 32MB GeForce 2 GTS = $209
Cheapest 32MB Radeon = $149 from Best Buy after MIR
Cheapest 64MB Radeon = $264 (it might have a $50 rebate too)

I don't know about you, but the price doesn't sound all that bad compared to $600 for a V5 6000.

Hmm, since the V5 6000 will most likely use the same drivers as all the other V5s, I wonder of someone could enable 8X FSAA for the lower brand cards. Of course, it'd be useless

Enable 8x on a Voodoo 5 5500 (or god forbid a 4500) and we're talking S3 Virge speeds

"did they up the core by oc'ing it?"

well if you consider that every company does this, then yeah, they did. AMD, Intel, nVidia, and 3dfx ALL try to put the chips that aren't capable of high speeds in low cost parts. they can make more money off them if they fail the standard test this way.

notice that the RAM is also 5.5ns, that means, that it is NOT overclocked.

BTW, most Voodoo 3's could hit 183 with a good heatsink (and some needed a fan). the Voodoo 4/5 series chips aren't too different from the Voodoo 3 chips, so it's not surprising that they can hit 183 mhz (hey I can get my Voodoo 3 2000 (default of 143mhz) up to 200mhz with no crashes if I add a fan!).

so this increase in mhz gives us how many extra Mpixels? 136.. ehh. that's ok I guess.

FSAA is great man.. I gotta see if 8X helps or not.. now I can't live without either extremely high res, or FSAA.

did you guys see the firingsquad benches with the 3dfx 1.03 drivers? they showed a measured improvement where fillrate matters (FSAA, and high res). take a look. I'm willing to bet that this monster will be able to hit 1024X768X32 with 4XFSAA at around 60FPS (perhaps a bit lower). that'll be sweet..

What's the point of 8x anyway? Things already look sharpe as a razor at 4x to me :Q

this is the one thing 3dfx has been promising from the beginning with their V5-6000 (1024x768x32 w/ 4x fsaa @ 60fps). 1024x768 with 4x FSAA would be DAMN sharp.

too bad it costs so much.

I never was able to fully appreciate FSAA until just yesterday. Until yesterday, I played mostly UT and Q3, FSAA is kinda useless in those. Then I got Madden 2001. Runnig 1024x768 and 4x FSAA. Wow. It's great...using that FSAA demo key to turn it on and off....it is just SOO much better. 4x is so good, I can't even imagine 8x.

EDIT: I'm glad I think imagine is spelled image.....

with 8x, I suspect the returns will be alot smaller (it won't improve it as much as say from no FSAA to 4X FSAA).. for games like Forsaken, Madden, etc etc, 4X FSAA coupled with 1600X1200 I think would be better then 800X600 /w 8X FSAA..

1600x1200x4x needs twice as much fill as 800x600x8x... that would be killer...

Hmmm 8x fsaa...that must take a ton of memory. Of course the 6000 has the memory I'm just not sure I'd ever enable 8x if I had that card. :frown:

Deeko,
I have to disagree with you about running FSAA in UT and Q3. In fact, I noticed that when playing UT at 800x600 will all eye candy on (i.e. everything thing turned on) and I use 2x FSAA that my FPS do not drop at all. Not even 1 fps. Since the release of the new V5 drivers, I now can toggle between 2x FSAA and no FSAA with a hot key. And there is a DEFINITE difference in how it looks. It really cleans up alot of jaggies and I don't know how to explain it but it just cleans up the picture alot. Also I use the new LOD (level of detail) and WOW! I can't tell you how impressive UT at 800x600 with 2X FSAAA with LOD set to -.50 looks like. Absolutely the best looking image quality you can get for UT period and I maintain mid 60's FPS in almost all CTF levels when I'm playing online. There are a couple of CTF levels where it dips into the 40's but they are very wide open levels. I maintain 55+ in the CTF map Civil War for example. I can also play Q3 800x600x32 with all details maxed with 2x FSAA timedemo demo1 at 56 FPS. Personally, I think Q3 can use FSAA more than UT, but that's just my humble opinion . The V5 5500 is an awesome card. Especially if you play UT. Here is my setup:

Athlon Classic 500@700 (1.6 volts)
Micron PC100 256mb
IBM 20gb (7200 rpm)
V5 5500 (latest drivers)
Acer 50x CD-rom
SB Live value
Boston Acoustics MicroMedia speakers
21in KDS Avitron monitor (sony tube)

You pair the V5 5500 with the 21in KDS and 2d/3d image quality is excellent. Now 4x FSAA in UT and Q3 is a different story all together, but 2x FSAA definitely makes a difference.
Later guys.

People still play Forsaken here? What a graphic marvel!

And there will be people buying the 6000, a lot of them. Trust me.
