Voodoo3 + linux + UT, should it be this hard?

Ok heres the deal, I have an old voodoo3 3000 (like just about half of us out there), and I do a fair amount of software devolpment for school on sun servers, so I am in linux all of the time so I can run the apps remotly with my X server. I just want to be ablw to jump into UT for ten minutes while I am doing this, instead of having to boot all the way into win2k or win98. Now this is my second installation trying to get it to work (destroyed the last installation when my power went out during a disk check <- that sucked by the way). I think I have everything configured correctly, since I can run mesa gear, morph and reflect all just find and at the same time even. I am using XFree 4.02, mandrake 8.0, and UT just won't play. I have tried a ton of stuff and I have gotten it to the point of being able to enter the game and getting into the intro. It will go through the intro at about 1-3 fps (a guess) and with maybe a max of six polygons on the screen incorrectly colored, and the rest of the screen white, and I can get into the games and by knowing where to click actually exit the game correctly. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same problem or knows a fix I would greatly appreciate it. All of those long hours of programming need a couple of minutes of mayhem to releave the stress. Hang on a sec, you said you were doing this on Sun servers? Is UT compatible with Sun processors? I'm not too experienced with Linux, but don't apps have to be recompiled to use a different architecture? Seems to me there would need to be a Sun version of UT before you could get it to run correctly.

Nick, I think he's just saying that he's very familiar with Linux/Sun OSes, but is running UT in Mandrake Linux 8.0.

Is it AGP or PCI? Maybe you have to download newer drivers???

I am a big-time newbie in Linux, so I have no idea otherwise.

Okay, thanks jamesbond007, I got it now.

As for your problem, perhaps the people on the Loki forums, or perhaps Loki themselves, would be able to better answer your question, as I don't think too many people around here do games on Linux.

Other than downloading the latest patches, the latest kernel patches, and the latest support for your graphics card, I don't know. Sorry, Linux just ain't my area of expertise.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunetly I have been unable to find new drivers except from DRI's website and these you have to compile yourself. Unfortunetly the instructions that come with them are still for xFree 3.x so that isn't too much help. I would love to download the newest drivers for the voodoo3 (mine is PCI) but I cannot seem to find them anywhere. All of the old sites that had them point to 3dfx's old driver site, which of course is taken down. If any one has any ideas let me know. I guess I will have to try to find some answers on loki's site. Thanks though. If anyone else has some input I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok I finally figured out that DRI is just plain not loading. Does anyone out there know why dri would not load on startup or how to check to see what is happening to cause it not load. Grrr, well at least I know the problem, now to find the fix.
