Voodoo5 or ATI Radeon?

My friend currently has a Voodoo5 in his system. He'll be getting a new system soon that includes an ATI Radeon 64mb DDR AGP w/TV in & out. Which video card is better (gaming and such)? He'll be giving his old computer to his sis. I figured the ATI is newer, the company is still in business and has twice the memory, so it should be better right? But Voodoo's always kicked ass in 3d am I right?

ATI Radeon 64Mb is a much better solution than the Voodoo5. That thing was a dead horse when it came out IMO.

Nothing personal aginst 3Dfx, but hey the V5 was too little too late.

I have to agree. I have the Voodoo5-5500 AGP. It's OK for now but the Radeon will do you good for the future.

The Voodoo 5 didn't really kick ass like the Voodoo 2 did. Are you asking for your friend? I think he'll probably like the VIVO and maybe play with it when he gets a chance, something his sis may not do? That and the Radeon is faster overall.

Voodoo 5 is great if you keep the resolutions reasonable, and use the 4X FSAA. if not for the FSAA, then Voodoo 5 would suck.

I would avoid the Voodoo5 since 3Dfx will no longer be supporting their products. No reason to buy a card that possibly won't have any updated drivers. I've never used a Radeon though, so I have no clue if it's any good.

The only reason the voodoo2 kicked ass was because the only games out were low quality stuff, and there really were not any other video card companies to compete with them. Untill the TNT came out of course. Then BOOM BOOM BOOM, 3DFX dies years later. hehe

3dfx does not suck! The image quality is excellent, compatibility rivals that of the GeForces, and speed is almost equal to a GTS (V5) in most games.
Tell me **WHY** 3dfx sucks?
They made a couple bad decisions and didn't get their products out as soon as hoped, but they're still really good products. I don't see what everyone's problem is...

Anyways, I think the reason people put 3DFX down is because they always talked so much trash about nvidia, and how their products are so much better, instead of acctuly proving it.. Thats one of the reasons I disliked 3DFX. That is, as a company. They did make good video cards, decent speed, decent price. They still have good cards for the price, but I sure as hell wouldnt buy a 3DFX card without driver support, but maybe thats just me. As soon as the Geforce1 was released, it was all over. 3DFX were still living in the past, with their &quot;image quality doesnt matter, only speed&quot; theories. That is what killed them.
Now it is the battle of new Titans, ATI vs Nvidia.

I find it funny how some here say the Voodoo5 sucks and to get a Radeon, well the Radeon has crappy drivers, and probably always will.

I'm also not so sure about the Radeon being any faster than the Voodoo5 either.

I owned a Radeon once, but returned it because it wasn't much faster than my G400 card. The drivers were also very buggy.

I believe the new WindowsXP has built in Voodoo support.

The Radeon is loaded with features, but do they all work, did they work when the card came out? FSAA is just great on radeon.........

well yes they don't all work, but its the effort to advance the industry thats good. 3dfx did nothing but hold back the gaming industry after v2. moot point anyhow, 3dfx died from not thinking foward.

cept for fsaa, the radeon works well enough.

have u own voodoo5? dont compare the old old old technology with the new technology, i am currently have voodoo5 and asus v7700 on my 2 machine, so far my voodoo5 run rock here! my v7700 2D is horrible, i am can not stand in high resolution with this card, the text is blurry, about ATI i dont know because i never have this card, so no comment here

Actually Voodoo5 IS Voodoo2 in a sense because 3Dfx/3dfx Based everything after voodoo2 on voodoo2 hence:
Voodoo Banshee (my first 3dcard)
Voodoo3
Voodoo4/5

Thats probably why 3dfx is dead but you can get a V5 pretty cheap these days so if you want go
ahead and be a 3dfx ghoul
