First, I noticed yesterday/today that I am experiencing more lockups then usual. Out of curiosity I checked the temps on both chips with my infared thermometer. The chip closer to the backplate is about 5-10 degrees warmer then the other.

Second question is with WinXP. What drivers are best for this OS? I just started messing with XP last week and have been using the MS drivers that are included. After attempting to play HFS:HP2, windows was acting very strangely until I reinstalled the driver.

Ah Ha! There's your problem, XP. Put simply, as 3Dfx Died before XP was near Beta, Microsoft could no longer provide full support for the Voodoo's as nVidia who now own 3Dfx's assets, wouldn't allow MS access to the driver source. Effectively this means basic shite drivers are provided, crap Direct3D, no Glide, almost non-existant OpenGL. If you need drivers you'll have to get third-party ones from VoodooFiles - Video Drivers Galore!. Go for the last released 3Dfx Underground ones as they are most reliable and stable (some of them are actually ex-3Dfx). Hope it works and happy gaming!

The 3dfxu 1.009 beta 4 drivers are the best in my experience. NFS HP2 works fine with them, but NOLF2 and a few other newer games have serious issues although workarounds exist for some.

Your temp differences are likely an airflow issue, either your fan is slowing down or the air movement in your case varies from one chip to the other. As for lockups, that's quite likely a driver issue(are you getting BSODs?).

sigh... 3dfx gone forever.

need a new chip company to join the fray. this ATI vs nVidia stuff is getting boring.

-Bitboys gave up
-S3 has re-delayed the "fixed" version of the aged Savage2000, have a paper product ("Columbia" due Q203) which has specs similar to Radeon 9700
-ST Micro quit making Kyro chips, no one seems interested in picking up the Kyro3 design.
-Matrox is still alive, but they focused on a niche market with latest product.
-SiS make an impressive leap into the performance marketwith Xabre... but they need some driver work.
-Trident also has something brewing.
-Intel has improved their embedded core (based on i740) for the 845G craphics, but no plans for a desktop version. The whole Real3D fiasco taught them that lesson.

Sorry I digressed. Sandorski is right about the beta 4's being pretty good. Can't use the default Xp drivers for anything, they are poor.

I knew you guys had the info I needed. I think my lockup problem is a combo of drivers and possibly my chip. I had to hardwire it for 1.65V to even get XP to boot. Anyway, I'll definitely try out the recommended driver.

i thought VIA bought up the graphics division of STMicro (or something)... so maybe VIA has something up their sleeves with the Kyro chip.

I hope it fares better than S3 has under VIA's control.

absolute rubbish

nVidia bought up most of what was left of 3dfx but I doubt the statement about MS is accurate.
