Right now I have the TNT2 32MB video card. Is it worth spending $100 on a voodoo 5? Would there be any big difference in games like Unreal and serious sam?
Yeah, a V5 would be a definite improvement. But you might also want to look into getting an ATI Radeon LE. Change the registry and unlock the "Hyper-z" function, and it's a very nice card. Those can be had for under $100.
There is certainly a huge difference in Unreal Tournament, but maybe not Serious Sam. I would say that the KyroII for $150 is probably a better buy, but if you like FSAA, V5 should serve you well.
I like my V5-5500 well enough, but I don't think I'd buy one if I were you.
Wait until the cards with programmable T&L are out and reasonably priced.
Programmable T&L is a really big jump...far bigger than the GeForce's T&L over a non-T&L card (well it will be when game developers start using it).
If I were you I'd try and hold out a little longer.
Image quality is greatly improved with FSAA. I found that my celeron 877 system with a voodoo5 5500 would have better image quality at 1280x1024 then my new tbird1.2 system with a geforce 2 pro at 1600x1200. The FSAA in the voodoo really spoils you.
I agree, nippyjun. The FSAA on my Radeon can't hold a candle to the V5's. No wonder not a whole lot of people care about FSAA. They haven't experienced it on a V5.
the V5 is a loveable card. it is good if you have a fast cpu especially, or alternatively if you have a slower cpu and are willing to play at lower resolutions with FSAA where the card does the work.
waiting for that magic "next-gen" card is not a good idea. you will be waiting forever, and there are such good cards to choose from now.
yes the LE is a good price, but if you can find the V5 for $100 it is a better one. consider the games you play too, simulations and older games are very good on the V5. next years games will be tougher on it.
best to go with norakai's suggestion, a geforce 3 mx would really rock If your desperate, get an le, last i checked they were 77bux shipped. Not sure if it makes a dif, but black and white/tribes 2 already seem to support t&l.

First I'd ask what type of games do you play. The V5 is excellent for racing sims, flight sims, and any glide based games (Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament, etc). If it is a combination of glide, d3d, and open gl games, I like the Radeon LE. Very nice card for under $100.
I'm using x3dfx.com's HSR drivers and my V5 5500 gets as fast speeds as a GF2U, even with 2x FSAA. Far faster than a GF2U without the HSR drivers, and they work fine: stable, no glitches, and beautiful . 1024x768x16x2fsaa and I get 130 FPS in UT, 110 during heavy firefights.... I love this card!!
