Voter ID: Joy... where American conservatives go, British conservatives follow

"The proposals follow two trials which involved five areas in England during council elections last year and 10 areas in May this year.
During the first trial, about 340 people were turned away from voting and did not return with ID, compared to about 750 people in the second trial. That represented less than 1% of eligible voters in both trials."

And maybe 1% of those people don't have any valid ID at all, so wow, this looks like a really appropriate bit of legislation!

Living in the UK:

There are very few occasions for which I must have ID on me. If I was stopped by the police for some reason and they demanded to see my ID, the legal obligation AFAIK is for me to visit a police station within x days to present my ID. If one has neither a driving licence or a passport, then one has no valid photo ID. Since we're not requiring people to learn to drive or leave the country, then logically yet another sufficiently valid form of ID would need to be produced by the government which will cost at least millions of pounds. An unbiased cost/benefit analysis would show that it's a pointless waste of time. Also, for voter ID to make any kind of sense, every voting facility / polling station would need to be equipped to be able to electronically read the data from such ID cards, and for that equipment to be protected to ensure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Again, more pointless waste of public money.

When I go to vote, I'm asked my name and address and they're crossed off the list by the people running the voting facility / polling station. If there was some widespread issue with voter fraud, it would have been exposed with tonnes of decent documentation decades ago. I've never heard of voter fraud in the UK.

Then the Government should issue one to all eligible Voters.

And free of charge. Otherwise you're charging people for the privilege of voting.

VoterID should be mandatory.
Sure because you want to disenfranchise minorities.

Now if you want to require an ID already owned by all like a utility bill. Or make it a requirement of the state to issue every qualified citizen at their cost then I'm ok with it.

Whenever pressed for widespread instances of fraud that would necessitate this, conservatives go silent. Because these nitwits know it doesn't exist and they're just trying to disenfranchise the poor who wouldn't vote for them.

But they's skeered, you see, of the evil libruhls taking over by nefarious means. Not to mention that they'll abandon democracy before they'll abandon conservatism.

And you showed your ID when you last registered to vote.
