in this day and age how can you not have ID? its required for so many things
Living in the UK:
There are very few occasions for which I must have ID on me. If I was stopped by the police for some reason and they demanded to see my ID, the legal obligation AFAIK is for me to visit a police station within x days to present my ID. If one has neither a driving licence or a passport, then one has no valid photo ID. Since we're not requiring people to learn to drive or leave the country, then logically yet another sufficiently valid form of ID would need to be produced by the government which will cost at least millions of pounds. An unbiased cost/benefit analysis would show that it's a pointless waste of time. Also, for voter ID to make any kind of sense, every voting facility / polling station would need to be equipped to be able to electronically read the data from such ID cards, and for that equipment to be protected to ensure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Again, more pointless waste of public money.
When I go to vote, I'm asked my name and address and they're crossed off the list by the people running the voting facility / polling station. If there was some widespread issue with voter fraud, it would have been exposed with tonnes of decent documentation decades ago. I've never heard of voter fraud in the UK.
Then the Government should issue one to all eligible Voters.
And free of charge. Otherwise you're charging people for the privilege of voting.
