The proposed amendments in Mississippi, Montana and Oregon refer only to marriage. Those in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah would ban civil unions as well, and those extra provisions have generated extra controversy.

Recent polls showed support for the amendments at 76 percent in Oklahoma and Kentucky, 65 percent in Arkansas, 60 percent or more in Michigan, 59 percent in Montana and 57 percent in Ohio.

The message is clear: the majority of people in those states hate gays. They see them as freaks to be relegated to second-class citizens. Congratulations on perpetuating bigotry in our great nation! /sarcasm. :|

This makes a mockery of civil rights.

People don't really understand their democratic duty, for the most part, and the government seems to have forgotten the whole "protect the minorites" part of the "will of the majority". Fvcking pathetic.

I'm honestly scared with people like this in charge of ANYTHING.

There have been about 8000 threads in the past couple months that have given sound justifications for a homosexual marriage ban. You should probably hold back the "bigot" label until you've read those justifications.

Right, keep telling yourself that. Oh, right, I don't hate gay people, I just don't think they should have the same rights I do. Makes perfect sense to me!

I've yet to read one. The closest any of them came is when they mention Religious values and they aren't sound because not everybody shares those values.

I've read them, they suck. Those "sound justifications" lack any kind of logical argument, and I feel sorry for anyone who thinks they do.

This might be a good thing though, if it's done on a state level. It will be a great guide of places I don't want to live!

Please be more specific. What particular "problem" is being solved, and what makes it a problem in the first place?

just because certain liberals want to rage a cultural war against our traditional values doesn't mean the rest of us have to agree with it. I'll say it again, banning gay marriage /= hatred of gay people.

I think they should do away with marraige altogether. Marraige is a joke if people are allowed divorce at will.

When traditional values infringe of the rights of others those values should be set aside.

The role of the government in this country is not to protect the rights of the minority. Where do people keep getting this idea? It's to protect the rights of everybody.

I don't doubt that many of the people supporting these measures hate gay people. Most red state bush supporters are fear-addicts. They love being afraid and angry at muslims most of all right now, but that won't stop them from hating their long-time targets: gays and blacks.

That said, I am against gay marriage (pro civil union with same rights except different word) but I don't hate gays.

That is where you, and many others, are incorrect. Homosexuals have every right that heterosexuals do. They can get married in the same way that you and I can get married. Now, they cannot "marry" someone of the same sex, but neither can you or I. This is not a civil rights issue, period.

just tell me how does it make me hate gay people just because i don't agree with gay marriage?

with all that said, i don't think the government should issue marriage licenses. if people want to "get married" they'll have to do it at a church. all problems solved.

Including those of Minorities. These amendments are not protecting the rights of anybody!

Yes, most Americans are small minded fear-addicts.

Where do you get this stuff?

<---PROUD to have voted agains the michigan gay marriage ban.

I"ve talked with a number of people who are both for and against gay marriage. overwhelmingly, with those against it, it boils down to prejudice and a total lack of understanding.

say all you want about "traditional values", but it can't hide the fact that you're a disgrace of a human being.

Sure they are... they guarantee that the act of marriage will remain as is for years to come.

I can't stand it either, I live in North Dakota. Everyone seems to have a idea that American is a "Christian Nation" and gay marriage is wrong cause their bible humping pastor said so...
