Have installed 2 p3 700's, 2 sticks of 256 ram, ibm HD and ati video card. Will go into 98, but I get an error when it actually tries to get into 2000. It gives me: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE ?

I think I've heard when using 2 cpu's and W2k you should install the OS using only 1 cpu in the system and then after it is installed put in the second cpu and the extra files needed for smp.

Actually its not like you "should" install it with 1 cpu, windows 2000 was setup to be installed with 1 cpu and then have SMP setup. Hope that helps..

If you swapped boards on an existing Win2k installation, Win2k is going to blow up. This is because the HAL doesn't recognize the change and then cannot communicate with the hardware.

Also, yes, you have to install with 1 CPU and then add the other processors later, otherwise Win2k will blow up to this as well

Have installed w2k several times on BP6 with both processors in place. Are there other issues with VP6? In any event, you can go from single to dual processor HAL simply by making the change in device manager. For ACPI change you've got to reinstall, but not for SMP.

I installed Win2K on a VP6 with two 700e's with no problem at all. I have no idea why people are telling you to install with one CPU then put the second one in and update the OS. That's a real pain in the ass. Do you have the drive you're trying to boot Win2K off of on the ATA100 controller? If you do this may be your problem. Put the drive on the ATA66 controller and see if it works for you then. If this isn't the problem then I don't know what to tell you. But I will say it's not that you're installing Win2K with two processors installed. Good luck and email me if you want more help.

thanks guys. Well, I went ahead and reinstalled Win2k since it looks like you have to after installing the vp6. I went ahead and took one 700 with fop38 out. Wish I would have tried it with both installed now. I hate installing these.

It's working fine with the once 700. Right now it's at 1001 with most bios settings set for max performance. Now I need to install other 700 and about a gazillion programs.

Thanks

The Problem is that win2k doesn't have the drivers for ata access. Reboot on 66 controller, update, make sure the drivers are installed, and then move back. I had this problem on my bp6....

You have to do a fresh win2k install. You cant just start switching setups with the hard drive. As some one else mentioned, it wont recognize the HAL. Also installing it with 1 cpu first is not a great idea since you want win2k to detect both during install so that you can get the smp enabled.

good luck

Long live the BP6

yeah I wish I would have re-installed with both CPU's. How do I set it up once I add the second cpu in now that I have reinstalled 2000 with just one cpu?

It's unbelievable how many conflicting answers you get from various sites. It would be nice if people would state facts.

Thanks guys!

OK, now I have it running fine under win2k with both processors installed. What do I need to do to make sure both processors are available?

Thanks eveyone

Open up task manager, and if you see two cpu histories, then I imagine both cpus are being used. I don't know why people told you to install with one cpu. I've never heard of that, and I installed using both.

Check to see what HAL is installed. Go to device manager, and it's under the Computer section. It should be set to ACPI multiprocessor (since with the VP6 ACPI is always enabled, or at least I haven't found a way to disable it). Since win2k is only reporting one cpu for you, then it might say something with uniprocessor. I've heard it's bad to switch the HAL mode from here and that a reinstall is best, which is why having two processors installed while you're installed win2k is a good thing. I guess you can try changing the HAL and see what happens, but it could go wrong.

Against better judgement I went ahead and updated the driver to the multi processor and all seems well.

Thanks!

So does this mean for a fresh install of a VP6 system using SMP (say your building a new system) you should put both chips in when you do the Win2k install or only 1? So many different opinions out there.
