VPN Capable Router and Home Network Design Help

Hello,

I am designing the system for my new house, I am in Canada, and as such would like to have my AppleTVs on a VPN connection to the USA. I use a LT2P/IPsec VPN.

My network needs are:
- Gigabit for all ethernet connections
- 18 ethernet connections to different rooms.
- 4 AppleTV ethernet connections to always connect through VPN.
- 2 or 3 Wireless APs

My network wants are:
- POE to the wireless APs
- AC wireless network

Current equipment (could replace)
- Airport Extreme (new AC version)
- Two single band Airport Expresses
- Dual Band Airport Express
- 1,000 ft of uncut Cat 6 UTP.

In conclusion: The first thing I need help with is finding a router, or multiple router set up so that I can have local (non-VPN) connections for all ports except the AppleTV ports which will connect through L2TP/IPsec VPN.

Secondly, if you have thoughts on what type of 24-port switch I should by and what type of wireless APs that would be greatly appreciated.

That looks promising. I'm downloading its setup info right now.

However, do you know if there's a Gigabit version of it? Looks like it's just 10/100. Could devices could file share across the network regardless of whether it was connected via VPN or regular?

One thing to keep in mind is that most consumer grade routers can only push a few Mbps of traffic using L2TP/IPSec/OpenVPN before it maxes out system load. Since you are using Apple TV on the VPN, I'm assuming you are using it to skirt region lock settings in order to stream. If that is the case, you will find any consumer grade solution, including that Cisco, inadequate. For your needs, I might suggest a home built firewall using pfsense.

Your thoughts on that, Jack? He's gonna have multiple Apple TVs streaming over that VPN. I'm thinking 10-20 Mbps over that tunnel with all 4 devices streaming at once.
