VPN from work to home...

Can someone recommend some easy solutions to setup VPN software on a home machine that will allow me to access it from work via HTTPS/Web browser? Something that can be accessed via web javascript or active-x etc. type stuff as their are restrictions on being able to install 3rd party software.


Any helpful replies are appreciated, I will be able to check back later today to look into recommendations, id really like to implement something by the end of day tomorrow.

Even some guidance on using windows remote desktop or some sort via browser but setting it up correctly on my home machine so I can access it from work might be worthwhile.....(If there is not a more robust/easier way...)

If you are not able to install 3rd-party software then the IT department has put restrictions on doing that for a reason. I would contact your IT department and see what they suggest, if anything. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if you try to circumvent your IT department nothing good will come of it.

If you can't install software on your work computer there is not much you can do. The closest thing to what you are talking about is implementing a SSL VPN but again that would have to be setup by the IT dept. Other remote access options like Teamviewer and LogMeIn will require a software install.

Most common versions of VNC have a Java component that can run in a web browser.

You could try that, but I think they still require some level of admin access to the machine.

If your work IT guys allow it, you could use Chrome Remote Desktop. You wouldn't need to use a VPN with it.

Thanks for these recommendations, ill do some research a little later today and see which would work best, I do have admin rights on the machines at both locations.

I would probably use Chrome Remote Desktop, or good ole MSTSC (RDP) to your home PC. You'll have to do some port forwarding if you're behind a router (and I hope you are)...3389 is the default port so you would have to set that up on your SoHo equipment to the IP of your device.

As others have said though, make sure this is okay before doing it....if your IT dept. is on the ball it's just a matter of time before they see the extra bandwidth usage on your device.
