VPN on Win98 - can't get connection

I'm trying to connect 2 Win98 machines with VPN & not having any luck. I've got a VPN adapter set up on both machines. When I try a connection, it says 'connection refused' by the host. The password I'm using is good 'cause it's the one I use to login with on the server. I've done it with NT using RAS, but there doesn't seem to be any RAS on Win98.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I believe VPN is only client on Win9X not server..

You would need one of the machines to be Win2k, NT Server 4.0, Win2k Server, or possibly NT 4.0 workstation.

Anyhow, you need some sort of Remote Access Server running. Win9X doesn't have an Access Server built into it.

Windows 98 Does have a VPN server program. You need to intall it manually. However, there are so many shortcomings with the program, that you will be better off trying with W2K. I sounds like you are trying to use a 3rd party program like Checkpoint. If you are, you will need both the server and the client part of the software.

Great - could you tell me what it is and where on the CD I could find it? I've been over that darn install CD and can't find anything recognisable as a server. Limitations or now, at least it should work to setup and test with before we lay out for a commercial package.

I don't have Win98 anymore, but if I remember correctly... I think it is only on Win98SE.

Go to the "add/remove programs" in control panel
Go to the add windows components tab.
I think it is either in the communication section or the networking section there is a "VPN server" selection.
After you select that, you will need to go into dial-up networking and activate VPN server. It is on one of the pull down menus in dial-up networking.

I hope that helps. Now, if you find it, and install this server on win98, don't get your hopes up. I tried it for a while. I got tired of all the bad connections, and the hanging up the connection all the time. The setting up of security is no piece of cake either. I gave up and setup a VPN server on WinNT, then on Win2K. Even then, it was very complicated. Be aware that if you have a router on your system, you will need to open some ports in order for the VPN to work.
