Hi guys, I recently set up my HTPC running Windows 7 Pro as a VPN server. I am able to connect to the VPN server just fine when I'm using the iPhone. However, when I try to use another PC to connect to it, it doesn't work. It just keep giving me the VPN error code 800. What could cause this?

I know my VPN server works and is set up properly because my iPhone can connect to it...why can't other desktop pc connect to it?

Is it because of a security measure built in to the windows 7 OS?

FACTS:
- Yes I know Win7 only allow 1 client connected at a time.
- Port 1723 is forwarded to the server.
- DNS is working properly (xxxxxxxx.no-ip.biz) because my iPhone can connect to the VPN through it.

How are you testing this ? from another connection ?

Is your iphone on the same wifi or going through the Telco's network ?

Is your router configure for pptp pass through ? is it a Linksys router or something else ?

I'm using the cell phone's internet connection (WIFI disabled) to connect to the server VPN. The router is set to forward port 1723 to the server's ip address 192.168.1.3.

Again, when I use my cell phone to connect to the VPN, it connect and logged in just fine. But when I use the Laptop in attempt to connect to the VPN, it just doesn't work.

Oh, for the laptop's internet connection, I use my phone to tether the connection.

I would venture to guess that "tethering" through your phone is causing the VPN server to look at it as two separate connections to your network. Either that or whatever the tethering does isn't allowing the required port to be forwarded across the tether.

You'd probably be better off using something like OpenVPN and connecting to your home network directly from each device.

SunnyD - the OpenVPN only allow 100MB of usage, which is too low.

The phone is connected to 4G LTE only, WIFI turned off. Went into the phone setting, set up VPN, and then connect. The phone is able to connect to the VPN server just fine. Yes the router is set to forward port 1723 to my static server IP and Yes I can see 1 client connected to my VPN under "Incoming Connection".

However, when I try to use my Laptop to connect to the VPN server, it just doesn't work. I don't know what i'm doing wrong.

Went to Network & Sharing, Click on "setup a new connection" and then "connect to a workplace" and then VPN. Put in IP address of VPN server and username/password.

That's where it stop, it won't connect and give me "Connection failed with error 800". The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly.

I don't think the tether phone connection has vpn pass through capability.

I'd go with this. Provided the laptop can connect to the VPN directly (on the same LAN) then its not a protocol or config issue. I'd suggest it has to do with the tethering.

I tether my iPad to my iPhone via bluetooth and it works fine... except iMessage.. It wont send or receive messages when tethered. Something about the encryption and certificates I'm guessing.

This is roughly similar situation.

Is this VPN L2TP/IPsec or PPTP? What's the VPN concentrator you're using? The error you're getting is consistent with the Windows 7 VPN client not configured properly. If you're using L2TP/IPsec then you're pre-shared key for IKE is likely not setup.

never mind I got it fixed, I reinstalled windows on the laptop and it is working now. Must be something/services I turned off with the old windows installation.
