My friend has an NT4 server which he is VPNing in from home...I believe from a Win9x machine. He was telling me that when he connects to his network at work, he can't browse the local network. No computers show up in the Network Neighborhood. He said if he uses the Find utility, he can search by the computer name and find the computer.

He also told me when he installs NetBEUI on the network at work, his computer at home can see all the computers in the network, but he doesn't want to run NetBEUI.

Is there a way he can browse the local network with TCP/IP only?

ummmm, have him login to the NT4 server's domain, and place himself in one of the workgroups he is trying to get access to.

If I remember correctly, in NT, you can specify your computer as "unseen" and generally can only be accessed via typing in the server's/workstation's name.

This is a security feature that NT has and as I mentioned above, one can "hide" the computer from the browsing network neighborhood. It's been some time since I crack my NT server or workstation book, but I'm pretty sure that could be a possiblity.

If he wants to access specific shares on the vpn network set up a bat file. Inside the bat file type "net use (drive): \\host\share" this will map specific shares to drive letters. You could also write this in your log on scripts. That is how I got around netbui.
