The locking occurs when I try and install a program, mainly. Doesn't always happen, but intermittently.
Installing (not downloading) Critical Updates seems to freeze the computer. It happened about 5-6 times yesterday.
I tried to install VB6 Enterprise yesterday, froze twice.
I tried double-clicking on the Time to set it from the taskbar, it froze.
I tried to install WinRAR, froze twice.
Sometimes it freezes by me just trying to navigate through the Start Programs menu.
Sometimes it freezes trying to explore a directory, both on the HD and on the CROM.
I installed the OS from the recovery CD using the quick format option. Office XP and VB6 Enterprise are installed and I uninstalled MS Works. WinRAR is installed now, too.
I managed to watch a VCD using PowerDVD with no problems, and also managed to burn one using Nero (installed it successfully) successfully.
I managed to install Sisoft Sandra Pro and run a looping system Burn-In process 10 times last night successfully. Then, after I tried to alter the Time setting, it froze.
As far as I know, there is nothing funky as far as software installed.
I managed to get it frozen just now by turning it on, clicking some folders in explorer, and then leaving it alone for a while. Came back, explored the CDROM (with driver disk inside) a couple of times, and now it's frozen. It must have been on for about 30 minutes. Maybe heat is a problem, but I'm not sure which component is overheating.
