It appears that images of Sony’s (NYSE: SNE) Slim PS4 model may have been leaked, leading to massive speculation and buzz within the gaming sphere.

The leaked images come from Italian games site Multiplayer Italy, and purportedly reveal a new compact form factor for the PS4 console.

Sony is no stranger to shrinking and changing up its consoles to make them more efficient–all three PlayStations have seen transformations throughout the decades, leading to “slim” redesigns across the board.

Colour me skeptical. Sony does love changing up their SKUs though, for better or worse. Just wish they'd work on their OS instead.

They really don't need to waste their time with this, PS4 is plenty slim and small (significantly smaller than the XB1, which is indeed going to have a slim version within the next year or two).

As said above, work on the OS, the straight forward UI is great already.

PS4 has a laptop type fan that sits underneath the motherboard and draws air in from the small vents on the sides and blows out the rear, in that tiny case, they'd really have to squeeze everything in hence use a laptop type motherboard (should be tricky when using a desktop-type APU plus RAM), I don't see this particular design happening since the CD drive pretty much takes up 3/4 of that whole estate inside.

Funny how I haven't seen this mentioned on Joystiq, IGN, Destructoid, VGLeaks (who would be all over this) or any of the other big gaming sites since this went up. I second the motion of shens.

The PS4 isn't that big anyway. It's only about the same size as the front-loader PS3 slim.

Not really. They announce this at E3 and it drops in September. That's almost 2 years since launch.

The PS3 only got smaller after 3 years because Sony a) dumped onboard PS2 EE-GS chips b) 90nm -> 65nm die shrink and c) removed space taken up from having a memory card reader, extra USB ports, and a smaller fan.

Well, it is pretty large compared to a gaming laptop with comparable specs. Considering that it's an APU, it should be even smaller.

I'm waiting for either the Slim or Uncharted 4, whichever comes first.

But it's still too early for a Slim model to hit the market, even if the design was finalized they'd probably wanna maximize their return on all the R&D and production facilities being utilized for the current SKU.

Either way, I hope the shrink down does away with the angled edges, seems like a complete waste of footprint space for design aesthetic, even if it is only a few inches.

I think uncharted 4 will be out before a slim comes out. Unless they can get one out the same time with the holiday season so it will sell decently.

The only way a smaller PS4 would make sense, is if AMD re-designed the core chips, with a node-shrink, such that they could run cooler / draw less power, and could be made cheaper.

Did AMD shrink the PS4 APU to 20nm?

Not unless you are a Plex subscriber. Its lame but it looks like if they went that route then there may not be any streaming patch.

I have never been a fan of the slimmer versions of consoles. Some of it is just me and some of it is actually losing features along with build quality..

With the slim versions usually come better consoles, cooler consoles, with larger hard drives. PS3 consoles lost features long before the slim version.
