Vsync, Refresh Lock - Mouse lag

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone here might have an idea on how to get rid of this annoying mouse lag I seem to get when I enable vsync or refresh lock in ATT. To clarify, the mouse becomes sluggish and delay ridden especially in areas with graphical effects (like smoke in Counter-Strike 1.6). It is not constant, however and remains playable for the most part, just under the aforementioned circumstance, it can be a real pain. Note: It really only happens majorly on CS 1.6 (OGL).

I'm using a Visionmaster 1451 LS902UT CRT monitor with it's correct drivers, I run most of my games at the resolution 1280x1024 (or 1280x960) at their maximum supported refresh rate of 85hz.

I'm using the Cat 5.8 Omegas, but it has been happening with every cat version I have ever used.

My mouse is the logitech MX510 with the 9.80 mouseware (latest), I don't have any acceleration enabled (but it happens either way).

I have tried using Raziel's usbport.sys hex edit to increase the sample rate of the mouse from 125hz to 250hz and even 500hz, but the lag still happens under the same circumstances.

It goes away when I disable VSync or refresh lock, but I don't like the tearing on the screen and it's not smooth enough for my tastes.

One thing I have noticed is that If I enable vysnc, I get a lock at 85fps reported back to me in netgraph (in CS). So Vsync is on and working.

However If I disable vsync (always off in ATT), but Enable refresh lock, the game runs smooth as if Vsync is on, yet netgraph reports 100fps as opposed to the max for that res which should be 85. It's bizarre but handy, and in either case the mouse lag exists in the same manner.

I don't know what to try so that I can retain the smoothness without having the mouse lag. Anyone got any ideas, because this is really annoying me.

Thanks in advance.

Did you enable triple buffering? I have not used ATI in a while, so I am not sure if their drivers include that option. Triple buffering is suppose to take care of your frame-rate problem and as a result, should eliminate the mouse lag.

Edit ** Ahhh, nevermind, I did not notice that it was also with the refresh rate lock. Hmm, not much I can say... I never have a problem with mouse lag. I always run vsync + triple buffering and never have a problem with mouselag. :-/... You using a USB mouse of PS2?

Maybe, try disabling triple buffering. At least for some games that were quite CPU intensive, not using triple buffering would free up the system a bit and decrease controller lag.

Nope didn't help at all. Infact I think it even made it worse.

This is so annoying, it's making games like CS unplayable, pls if anyone has an idea/solution to try I'm more than willing.

It's being caused by drops in my framerates in CS. On 32 player servers especially, my fps can drop to around 60 when in most cirumstances it doesn't drop below 90 and stays at 100 in most cases.

This is the only time it lags, so I guess it must just be a symptom of not being able to keep up with the refresh rate.

I've tried lower resolutions, and it doesn't happen as often but it does still happen enough to spoil the game.

CS must be very cpu limited, because my average framerate rarely changes no matter what the resolution so my only option is to disable Vsync and live with the lack of smoothness or find a way of getting more performance out of my CPU.

uninstall logitechs drivers/software and plug in the mouse to let windows autoinstall the default stuff... see if that helps then you know it's the logitech crap if it does

I will give that a try now.

I just realised that it does actually happen with Vsync off, it just doesn't happen as often.

By getting rid of the mouseware will I lose the functionality of the extra buttons?

Thanks for the response.

So I installed a generic mouse driver, got rid of mouseware and then installed the new NGO drivers and swapped the opengl driver to the old 3.8 version which was best for CS.

So far so good, no lag as of yet, and the side buttons still work in games (not on the desktop though). All this has been in 16 player servers, I'm gonna test it in a 32 player and see if the fps drops as much and the mouse still lags.

Fingers crossed.

Nah problem still exists.

I think I only started having problems when I installed these new beta drivers for my motherboard.(haven't updated sig)

I'm gonna go back to ones I know work properly and test again.

*edit*

Change in main board drivers did nothing. I never had this problem before it's so odd, but I can't pinpoint a time when it changed.

I wonder could catalyst A.I. be causing this? If it's set to low/high in ATT Ogl settings, but the driver is an old pre-Cat A.I. version, could this be causing an issue?

I tested it out, and I never noticed an ounce of lag. But most servers were empty, I only tested it on a 20 man. I'll give it a thorough going over tomorrow, see if it's not just all in my head.

nope, it still happens, but I've got it down to an absolute minimum now, it's playable but it still gets me killed quite often.
